Charles Schwab Asset Management (SAM) comprises proprietary and third-party investment management solutions, research insights, and platform management, overseeing substantial assets for our clients. SAM is expanding its team of dedicated investment professionals with diverse backgrounds in financial research, portfolio management, trading, and client relations. Each member of SAM is committed to serving the needs of Schwab clients.

SAM is seeking a Director to lead the Municipal Research Group. This group is responsible for evaluating credit across the municipal credit spectrum and the entire yield curve. The primary objective is to identify credit opportunities in the municipal sector for Schwab's managed accounts, mutual funds, and ETFs. The Director will be tasked with:

  • Conducting thorough analyses of issuers and debt structures within the general government and revenue sectors; experience in utility, transportation, and P-3 sub-sectors is advantageous;
  • Assisting portfolio managers in the security selection process by providing sector and issuer-specific risk assessments;
  • Establishing internal issuer/security ratings;
  • Compiling detailed, concise, and accurate credit reports;
  • Delivering verbal credit presentations to both large and small internal audiences;
  • Performing macro credit analysis of assigned sectors within the municipal bond market;
  • Conducting ongoing surveillance of assigned security holdings.

The Director will report to a senior member of the credit group while collaborating closely with other senior team members and mentoring junior analysts.

Key Success Factors:

  • Proven knowledge of and interest in financial markets, particularly fixed income;
  • Ability to think strategically and incorporate broad economic and municipal sector trends into investment recommendations;
  • Strong fundamental and in-depth issuer-specific credit analysis skills across a wide range of general government and revenue credits; special expertise in utility (water, sewer, public power), transportation (airports, toll roads), and P-3 sectors is a plus;
  • Experience analyzing lower-rated municipal credits in the BBB / BB categories;
  • Proven ability to write detailed, concise, and accurate credit reports;
  • Strong technology skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Excel and CreditScope; familiarity with Bloomberg and credit model construction is a plus;
  • Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills;
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple competing priorities within established deadlines;
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in making appropriate credit recommendations.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree or CFA preferred
  • 10 years of municipal credit experience at a rating agency, bond insurer, or buy-side firm
  • Demonstrated experience in mentoring and coaching junior-level employees

In addition to the salary range, this role is also eligible for bonus or incentive opportunities.
