Job Objective

Deliver engineering and mechanical design proficiency to the generation facility. Assess the operational performance of the units for reporting and data collection. Act as project coordinator on designated plant enhancement initiatives. Oversee life cycle monitoring of engineered systems.

This role is classified into level I and level II based on experience and demonstrated skills. Responsibilities are executed at each level according to the individual's expertise and experience.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Collect, analyze, and report unit performance metrics to regulatory bodies (such as EIA, NERC, MISO) and management. Based on the analysis of data,
    1. Assist in conducting performance evaluations on the units or specific apparatus (Real Power Capability, Reactive Power Capability, Pulverizer Clean Air Flow Capacity, Incremental Heat Rate, etc.).
    2. Support in establishing plant heat rates and capabilities based on performance evaluations.
    3. Contribute to the development of ASME heat rate testing for new plant apparatus.
    4. Assist in creating and managing plant diagnostic protocols.
  2. Oversee and support all stages of plant enhancement projects, including:
    1. Investigate operational and maintenance challenges, recommending and aiding in solutions as necessary.
    2. Design mechanical and electrical modifications for plant enhancements.
    3. Create and develop schematics for mechanical equipment installation from concept to execution.
    4. Collaborate with external contractors on projects, providing construction oversight as required.
    5. Maintain as-built schematics in the Utility's document management system as necessary per field modifications.
  3. Oversee and assist in the inspection and maintenance of engineered plant systems.
    1. Administer inspections of, evaluate reported conditions of, and recommend repairs for pipe support systems.
    2. Administer ultrasonic thickness evaluations of boiler tube components and critical piping, and suggest repairs.
    3. Administer or recommend external services to conduct diagnostic evaluations of plant equipment.
Additional Responsibilities
  1. Support Plant Engineers on various initiatives.
  2. Other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements

Qualifications

Knowledge
  1. Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering required, power option preferred.
  2. Mechanical Engineer I is an entry-level engineering position; Mechanical Engineer II is a minimum of 3 years power plant or related experience preferred.
  3. Design experience related to pipe sizing, flow calculations, and layout.
  4. Thorough understanding of applicable codes and standards governing work at power generation facilities, such as ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, National Board Codes, OSHA, NFPA, NEC, AWS, Performance Test Code.
  5. Familiarity with NERC, MISO, FERC, and EPA standards, regulations, and rules beneficial.
  6. Working knowledge of equipment specifications, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and heat transfer.
  7. Proficient in CAD software.
  8. Familiarity with programming languages such as VBA.
  9. Knowledge, or ability to quickly acquire knowledge, of the MPW generation facilities, including plant equipment, site utilities, piping, electrical, and control systems.
  10. Understanding of electrical methods and design.
  11. Ability to recommend software and applications to enhance departmental efficiency.
  12. Knowledge of performance software is advantageous.

  7. Experience with databases for SCADA and distributed control systems is beneficial.

Other Position Requirements
  1. Must be able to attend work regularly and work extended hours as required.
  2. Must comply with the Respiratory Protection Program.
Work Environment
  1. Work environment is primarily in an office setting at an industrial coal-fired power plant site. Frequent visits to the power plant or other outdoor job sites may be necessary.
  2. Must adhere to all safety and site regulations at all locations.

Mechanical Engineer I $68,000 - $85,000; Mechanical Engineer II $75,000 - $94,000 Depending on Qualifications
