Job Objective

Deliver electrical engineering assistance for ongoing projects in transmission and distribution, water services, technical operations, generation, and telecommunications. Collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders to provide engineering expertise and manage contract obligations as required. Coordinate with various departments to effectively schedule tasks.

This role is categorized into level I and level II based on the candidate's experience and proven capabilities. Responsibilities are assigned at each level according to the individual's knowledge and proficiency.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Oversee and synchronize current construction and maintenance initiatives, which include:
    1. Engaging with contractors and consultants.
    2. Regularly reviewing and updating construction standards and methodologies.
    3. Utilizing engineering principles to assess and select planning options.
    4. Supporting the design and configuration of electrical transmission and distribution systems. Reviewing work orders and coordinating tasks as necessary.
    5. Assisting in the coordination, interpretation, and preparation of studies related to electrical transmission and distribution systems, including computer models, load flow analyses, and short circuit evaluations.
  2. Facilitate engineering activities with industrial and commercial clients. This includes understanding MP&W policies, technical specifics (such as power factor and harmonics), and providing general support for electric service installations. Responsibilities may involve:
    1. Assisting in drafting and assessing major equipment specifications and contracts, including those for transformers and cables. Contracts may encompass pole attachment agreements, easements, and franchise agreements.
    2. Supporting utility arc flash assessments and supplying data for customer studies.
Additional Responsibilities
  1. Support the Chief Operations Engineer with technical challenges related to the operation and maintenance of electrical transmission and distribution, water services, technical operations, generation, and telecommunications systems.
  2. Assist the Planning Engineer in executing and analyzing compliance studies for regulatory bodies.
  3. Contribute to overall system reliability enhancement efforts, including the development and utilization of databases to monitor failures, maintenance, and outage occurrences.
  4. Participate in the formulation of the annual operating budget and relevant projections for the department.
  5. Perform other assigned duties as necessary.
Position Qualifications

Knowledge
  1. Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, preferably with a focus on power.
  2. Electrical Engineer I is an entry-level position; Electrical Engineer II requires a minimum of 3 years of experience in electric utility transmission and distribution.
  3. Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Iowa is advantageous for the level II position, or actively pursuing certification. If obtained, certification must be maintained during employment.
  4. Familiarity with relevant local, state, and federal codes and standards governing work on electric transmission and distribution systems, such as NESC, NEC, NFPA, OSHA, NERC, MRO, and MISO procedures, among others.
  5. Proficient in programming languages such as VBA.
  6. Experience with CAD and GIS is preferred.

  2. Excellent interpersonal and listening skills, with a capacity to foster productive professional relationships and encourage a collaborative atmosphere.
  3. Project management capabilities.
  4. Sound judgment and analytical skills.
  5. Proficient in problem identification, analysis, and resolution.
  6. Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Word and advanced skills in Excel.
  7. Experience with database information retrieval is preferred.

  4. Ability to develop, read, and interpret technical drawings, schematics, specifications, and manuals.
  5. Ability to distinguish colors.
Other Position Requirements
  1. Regular attendance and the ability to work extended hours as required.
  2. Must maintain a reliable method of communication to be reachable outside of standard working hours.
Work Environment
  1. The work environment is primarily office-based, with occasional visits to industrial sites or outdoor job locations as necessary. Fieldwork may be conducted in various weather conditions.
  2. Compliance with all safety and site regulations at all locations is mandatory.

Electrical Engineer I: $70,000 - $87,000; Electrical Engineer II: $77,000 - $96,000
