Job Overview

RED-Rochester, a prominent multi-utility generation facility and district energy provider, is located within one of the most extensive industrial parks. We are currently seeking a skilled Steam Turbine Utilities Mechanic who thrives on tackling challenges to enhance service delivery to our clients. Our infrastructure features a combination of traditional and contemporary industrial assets, necessitating a candidate with both mechanical and technical proficiency. This role involves instructing and supervising team members, managing relationships across various organizational levels, and collaborating with different departments to achieve operational success.

Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will be responsible for:

  • Maintaining clear and consistent communication regarding the operational status and requirements of assigned locations with the RED-Rochester supervisory team, maintenance planner, and operational staff.
  • Assisting the Maintenance Planner in formulating standard preventive maintenance protocols to maximize equipment uptime and longevity.
  • Collaborating with the Maintenance Planner to create corrective maintenance job plans, ensuring timely completion of repairs to uphold system redundancies for optimal emergency performance.
  • Coordinating all maintenance shutdown planning, both routine and emergency, while ensuring customer notifications are managed effectively.
  • Executing all planned maintenance tasks for designated locations and documenting actions within the RED-Rochester work order management system.
  • Overseeing any assigned equipment overhaul, upgrade, or modernization activities, ensuring compliance with safety standards and workmanship quality.
  • Supervising external contractors working within assigned locations to ensure adherence to safety policies and quality standards.
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of Health, Safety, and Environmental Plans relevant to assigned locations.
  • Participating in larger team efforts during major emergencies or significant failures.
  • Utilizing various tools and equipment, including hoists, cranes, and shop machinery, as well as potentially operating lifts and forklifts.
Equipment Expertise

The role requires familiarity with a range of equipment, including but not limited to:

  • Various sizes of pumps, from single-stage low-pressure centrifugal to multi-stage high-pressure systems.
  • Main plant multi-stage air compressors.
  • Steam turbines utilized for driving utility generation equipment.
  • Gas turbines and their auxiliary systems.
Soft Skills

Successful candidates will demonstrate:

  • Exceptional communication skills.
  • The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude.
  • Proficient troubleshooting skills.
  • Adherence to procedures and safety regulations.
  • Capability to interpret technical drawings and schematics.
Qualifications

Applicants should possess:

  • A high school diploma or GED.
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in utilities mechanics or a related field.
  • Preferred: An applicable Associate's or Bachelor's degree.
Licenses and Certifications

Required certifications include:

  • Safety operator licenses for equipment such as forklifts and man lifts.
  • OSHA 10-hour certification.
  • OSHA 30-hour certification within the first year of employment.
  • A valid NYS driver's license.
Work Environment

The position involves working in an industrial setting, which may include:

  • Exposure to various weather conditions.
  • Areas with potential hazardous materials.
  • Physically demanding tasks, including lifting and climbing.
