We are seeking experienced Inpatient Medical Coders (Coder III) who will be responsible for the precise assignment of Evaluation and Management (E&M) codes, ICD diagnoses, current procedural terminology (CPT), and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes, along with appropriate modifiers and quantities based on comprehensive medical record documentation.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Proficient knowledge and skills in medical coding.
  • Excellent communication and computer skills are essential for collaboration with healthcare providers and staff.
  • Strong understanding of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, medical terminology, coding guidelines, and documentation requirements.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects effectively and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

Preferred certifications include:

  • Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Outpatient Coder (COC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or Certified Coding Specialist – Physician (CCS-P) with a minimum of five (5) years of coding and/or auditing experience across multiple medical specialties within the last decade; OR a minimum of three (3) years of coding experience in a Military Treatment Facility (MTF). A minimum of one (1) year of experience in the specialty is required.
Must be a U.S. Citizen.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • An Associate's degree or higher in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or a related field; OR
  • A university certificate in medical coding; OR
  • At least 30 semester hours of college credit including relevant coursework such as anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and health information management; OR
  • Completion of a coding certification preparation course from AAPC or AHIMA that covers medical terminology, anatomy, health information management concepts, and pharmacology; OR
  • Completion of a training program beyond apprentice level for medical technicians or related roles in the Armed Forces or U.S. Maritime Service.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • A minimum of five (5) years of coding and/or auditing experience in various medical specialties within the last ten years; OR a minimum of three (3) years of coding experience in an MTF. At least one (1) year of experience in the specialty is necessary.

FAMILIARITY WITH MILITARY HEALTHCARE SYSTEMS:

  • MHS GENESIS and other electronic medical record systems.
  • Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS).
  • Military filing systems and medical record procedures.
  • Knowledge of MHS Coding Guidelines.
