I. Overview:
Under direct supervision, the Lead Inpatient Coding Specialist is responsible for accurately coding hospital inpatient accounts to ensure appropriate reimbursement, compliance with federal and state regulations, and the integrity of research and statistical data, utilizing established ICD-10-CM/PCS coding classification systems.
II. Key Responsibilities:
The following responsibilities outline the essential functions of this role:
- Act as a clinical coding subject matter expert, employing critical thinking to assess and resolve documentation challenges in collaboration with medical and clinical staff, as well as clinical documentation specialists.
- Analyze, code, and abstract intricate inpatient cases, including trauma, rehabilitation, neurology, and critical care, utilizing ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS nomenclature to guarantee precise APR-DRG/SOI/ROM and POA assignments.
- Engage in collaboration with fellow senior coders and coding staff to share insights and provide guidance on complex coding scenarios.
III. Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- Formal training in ICD-10-CM and CPT is essential; an Associate's or Bachelor's degree is preferred.
- A minimum of three years of experience in ICD-10-CM/ICD-10-PCS coding and abstracting within a Level 1 Trauma and Rehabilitation hospital, or four years of experience coding inpatient hospital medical records is required.
Certifications:
One of the following certifications is mandatory:
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
- Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
- Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC)

- Strong analytical and organizational abilities.

- Excellent customer service skills and familiarity with general office procedures.
- Problem-solving capabilities and the ability to work independently.
- Basic medical terminology knowledge and computer proficiency.
- Typing skills.
