The primary objective of this role is to assess and underwrite new business and renewals profitably, adhering to established guidelines and authority levels. Employ underwriting tools to ascertain precise classifications, rates, and premium charges. Familiarize yourself with state regulations, including cancellation and non-renewal policies, to effectively conduct business within your designated territory. Be well-versed in coverage forms and policy language, ensuring appropriate use of forms and exclusions. Aid in resolving premium audit disputes with assigned agents and brokers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluate, analyze, accept, and reject retail property risks to guarantee profitability for Markel;
  • Underwrite and select new business that promises an underwriting profit;
  • Oversee the existing renewal portfolio and implement corrective actions as necessary to meet profitability goals;
  • Engage with regional managers and national product line leaders regarding individual accounts, current and prospective producers, and provide recommendations on operations, systems, and procedures when suitable;
  • Participate in audits and/or underwriting meetings as required;
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with key producers while simultaneously monitoring the entire appointed producer base for profitability and production;
  • Analyze competitor forms and pricing, effectively marketing the Markel product within the competitive landscape;
  • Offer training or technical support to underwriting support staff within the department.
Qualifications
  • 8+ years of experience in retail property underwriting.
  • Experience managing large accounts with property values exceeding $1 billion is preferred.
  • Proven technical knowledge and skills reflecting a trajectory of increasing responsibility.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, along with strong presentation abilities;
  • Technologically proficient; skilled in Word, Outlook, and Excel;
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and time management capabilities;
  • A collaborative team player who thrives in a dynamic and flexible business environment;
  • Willingness to travel approximately 25% when necessary.
