Position Overview: We are in search of a dynamic Chief External Relations Officer to develop a forward-thinking, innovative, and all-encompassing strategy for external relations. This role is crucial in establishing a cohesive approach for our communications, fundraising, and brand recognition, aimed at fostering deeper connections with our primary audiences, expanding our membership, and generating the necessary revenue to fulfill our mission of promoting and safeguarding democracy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Development: Collaborate closely with the External Affairs team to formulate and execute a strategic plan for external communications and audience engagement.
  • Communications Strategy: Design, implement, and assess both short-term and long-term unified communications strategies to enhance the visibility of our organization and its mission.
  • Brand Messaging: Revise and refine our organizational branding and messaging to engage and activate our member network, ensuring consistency and differentiation across various audiences.
  • Audience Engagement: Identify and define key audience profiles to broaden outreach and increase engagement among essential stakeholders, particularly focusing on younger voters and activists.
  • Marketing Strategy: Ensure effective execution of our branding and marketing strategy, maintaining a consistent narrative and visual identity while optimizing resource use for produced materials.
  • Impact Evaluation: Develop and oversee processes to evaluate the effectiveness of external messaging, audience engagement, and advocacy campaigns.
  • Collaboration: Engage with internal teams and board members to ensure all external communication and marketing materials adhere to established standards for brand, message, tone, and style.
  • Fundraising Alignment: Align our communications and digital strategies with fundraising objectives and activities.
  • Crisis Management: Develop and manage a crisis communication process.
  • Fundraising Strategy: Collaborate with leadership to set and achieve substantial annual revenue goals.
  • Major Gifts Solicitation: Develop and implement strategies for major gifts solicitation and donor growth.
  • Thought Leadership: Position the organization as a thought leader and represent our national agenda publicly.
  • Media Relations: Cultivate meaningful relationships with media members and key audiences to expand visibility.

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in leading strategic communications and external relations, ideally within nonprofit organizations.
  • Strong background in developing innovative fundraising strategies that meet or exceed revenue targets.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex topics in an accessible manner.
  • Experience in managing and mentoring teams to achieve strategic objectives.
  • Ability to navigate organizational dynamics and build rapport with diverse stakeholders.

Work Environment: This position requires in-person collaboration and may involve occasional evening and weekend work to address urgent needs.
