Position Overview

We are in search of a dynamic Chief External Relations Officer to spearhead a forward-thinking, comprehensive strategy for external engagement. This role will focus on unifying our communication, fundraising, and branding efforts to foster deeper connections with our key stakeholders, enhance our membership base, and secure the financial resources necessary to uphold our mission of promoting and safeguarding democratic values.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with the External Affairs team to formulate and execute a strategic plan for external communications and audience engagement.
  • Design, implement, and assess a cohesive communications strategy aimed at elevating the visibility of our organization and its mission.
  • Refine our organizational brand and messaging to effectively engage and activate our member network, ensuring consistency and differentiation across various audiences.
  • Identify and define key audience profiles to broaden outreach and enhance engagement with stakeholders, particularly focusing on younger voters and activists.
  • Oversee the implementation of our branding and marketing strategy, ensuring a consistent narrative and visual identity across all materials.
  • Establish processes to evaluate the effectiveness of external messaging and advocacy campaigns.
  • Engage with internal teams and board members to maintain high standards for all external communication and marketing materials.
  • Align our communications and digital strategies with fundraising objectives.
  • Develop and manage a crisis communication strategy.
  • Work with leadership to set and achieve annual revenue targets exceeding $25 million.
  • Create and evaluate a multi-year strategic fundraising plan to diversify our funding sources.
  • Strengthen our strategic approach to both national and regional development efforts.
  • Implement strategies for major gift solicitation and growth in foundation and donor support.
  • Manage relationships with prospects and current supporters, ensuring tailored communication and cultivation.
  • Support the development of proposals, grant reports, and other materials to enhance organizational effectiveness and sustainability.
  • Advance our mission through media outreach and public communications, including white papers and policy reports.
  • Promote our self-published materials to engage new audiences and advocate for our agenda.
  • Serve as the organization's spokesperson and assist senior staff with public speaking engagements.
  • Foster relationships with media, partners, and key audiences to expand our reach and visibility.
  • Identify opportunities for public engagement through media and conferences, ensuring staff readiness to represent the organization.
  • Support the development of the External Affairs team, managing direct reports and overseeing a larger team, while fostering their professional growth.
  • Ensure effective coordination between the External Affairs team and other internal departments.
  • Monitor and adhere to departmental budgetary goals to support the organization's financial health.
