ROLE SUMMARY
The Senior Analyst will be an integral part of the Geoeconomic Influence & Threat Intelligence (GITI) team at Janes, focusing on two primary areas: 1) overseeing the IntelTrak database that tracks Russian and Chinese economic activities abroad, and 2) performing original research and analysis on geoeconomic and national security matters utilizing publicly accessible information.
GITI consists of expert linguists and analysts employing cutting-edge open-source research methodologies, automated sourcing, machine learning technologies, and public data investigations to deliver timely, accurate, and structured data. This data is essential for understanding the geoeconomic and national security ramifications of Russian and Chinese economic endeavors globally.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Senior Analyst will monitor overseas economic activities of China and Russia through open-source resources, crafting analytical products that interpret the geopolitical and security implications of these activities for our clients.
Key duties include:
- Conducting thorough research, writing, and analysis on topics related to Chinese foreign and industrial policies, corporations, and geoeconomic strategies.
- Acting as a subject matter expert within Janes and leading project-based teams, overseeing project management, workflow, and quality assurance of contributions from team members.
- Contributing to the management and administration of the IntelTrak dataset.
Additional tasks may involve delivering insightful client presentations and briefings, mentoring junior analysts, and developing templates and processes for various projects.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential. Candidates must be U.S. citizens and possess a bachelor's or master's degree in a relevant discipline, such as economics, business, international relations, national security, or regional studies.
QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will have:
- A minimum of five years of experience in international relations, national security, due diligence, or a related field.
- A deep understanding of the work domain, particularly regarding China's policymaking processes, strategic goals, business landscape, economic framework, and industrial capabilities.
- Experience in conducting and/or managing complex research projects under tight deadlines.
- A high level of attention to detail while maintaining a broad perspective, along with the ability to convey complex concepts in clear, concise writing.
- Demonstrated research proficiency, especially in utilizing publicly available sources in foreign languages.
DESIRABLE SKILLS
Strong communication abilities and professional experience representing an organization to external stakeholders are preferred. The candidate should also be capable of producing high-quality deliverables tailored to senior policymakers or national security audiences, including written reports and formal or informal briefings.
Expertise in specialized research areas is advantageous, including:
- China's foreign policy and global diplomatic initiatives.
- Development of dual-use technologies in China, including military-civil fusion projects and the R&D ecosystem.
- China's national security strategies and defense capabilities.
- U.S. and/or European foreign policy and legislative actions concerning China.
- Chinese economic interests and political-military relations in specific regions, such as Russia, Central Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, or Latin America.
Professional proficiency in Mandarin Chinese, including the ability to read and analyze original language documents, is required. Candidates must also be eligible to work in the United States.
