POSITION SUMMARY
The available position is within the Geoeconomic Influence & Threat Intelligence (GITI) team at Janes, which focuses on two primary business sectors: maintaining the IntelTrak database of Russian and Chinese international business activities and conducting tailored geoeconomic research and analysis.
The GITI team consists of proficient linguists and analysts who employ cutting-edge open-source intelligence methodologies, automated sourcing, and machine learning technologies to deliver timely, accurate, verified, structured, and interconnected data that enhances understanding of Russian and Chinese business operations abroad.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Research Analyst will monitor Chinese overseas economic initiatives utilizing open-source resources to produce analytical documents that interpret the geopolitical and security implications of these activities for clients.
Core responsibilities include:
- Conducting comprehensive research, writing, and analysis on topics related to Chinese foreign and industrial policies, Chinese corporations, and geo-economic strategies.
- Engaging in online research, writing, and analytical tasks.
The ideal candidate must be a U.S. citizen and possess a bachelor's or master's degree in a relevant discipline, such as economics, business, international relations, or regional studies.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
To be successful in this role, candidates should demonstrate:
- Advanced research and analytical capabilities, including proficiency in utilizing publicly available sources in foreign languages.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present information clearly and succinctly.
- A high level of attention to detail while maintaining a broad perspective.
- The ability to meet daily deadlines while ensuring quality and objectivity.
- Knowledge of China's policymaking processes, strategic goals, business landscape, economic framework, and industrial base.
- Eligibility to work in the United States.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Ideal candidates will have demonstrated knowledge in specialized research areas, which may include:
- China's foreign policy and global diplomatic engagements.
- China's development of dual-use technologies, including military-civil fusion initiatives and the R&D ecosystem.
- China's national security strategies and defense capabilities.
- U.S. and/or European foreign policy regarding China.
- Chinese economic interests and political-military relationships in specific regions, such as Russia, Central Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, or Latin America and the Caribbean.
Professional proficiency in Mandarin Chinese, including the ability to read and analyze original language sources, is essential.
