The objective of Correctional Managed Care is to meet the healthcare requirements of marginalized patient groups within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) and the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD).


POSITION OVERVIEW:
Operates under the guidance of the Associate Medical Director.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (Medical Director):

  • Facilitates the effective functioning of the UTMB Correctional Managed Care Organization.
  • Conducts thorough medical histories and physical assessments; formulates clinical evaluations based on findings; orders diagnostic procedures, interprets laboratory and radiologic results, prescribes medications, and administers treatments aligned with clinical evaluations.
  • Reviews, completes, and evaluates medical records; assigns, examines, and updates medical classifications; finalizes admission notes, discharge summaries, and conducts rounds on patients admitted to infirmaries or regional medical facilities.
  • Refers patients to specialists for further consultations, evaluations, and treatments.
  • Participates in a rotation with other physicians to provide after-hours and weekend patient care.
  • Directly oversees all physicians and physician assistants.
  • Manages all operations of the unit's medical department, ensuring adherence to all relevant standards, regulations, policies, procedures, and court orders.
  • Performs a variety of additional duties as required and assigned.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (Digital Medical Services/Telemedicine):

  • Adheres to and supports medical policies and procedures.
  • Ensures medical decisions are made equitably and in good faith for clients.
  • Investigates and proposes institutional policies and procedures that will enhance UTMB CMC's Digital Medical Services/Telemedicine.
  • Contributes to the formulation of health-related policies and standards that ensure the smooth operation of Digital Medical Services/Telemedicine and Electronic Utilization Review.
  • Guarantees that all review determinations comply with medical protocols, ethical standards, and applicable practice guidelines.
  • Actively engages in monitoring client health status, utilization standards, policies and procedures, patient outcome measures, quality, and client satisfaction.

  • Cultivates strong relationships with colleagues and specialty physicians to ensure positive interactions and high-quality care for clients.
  • Participates in Medical Quality Management, reviews quality issues, makes determinations, and assists in implementing interventions to enhance quality.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment is situated within a correctional facility. Security clearance is mandatory; pre-employment drug testing is also required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:


Must be licensed to practice medicine in the State of Texas with a minimum of ten (10) years of progressive management/leadership and patient care experience. Experience in Telemedicine, Electronic Utilization Review, and Quality Improvement is preferred.

Board Certification in any of the following fields: Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, or Emergency Medicine.

Compensation is commensurate with years of relevant work experience.
