The mission of the University of Texas Medical Branch is to meet the healthcare needs of marginalized patient populations within correctional systems.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
Operates under the guidance of the Associate Medical Director.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (Medical Director):
- Enhances the operational success of the Correctional Managed Care Organization.
- Conducts thorough medical histories and physical assessments; formulates clinical evaluations based on findings; orders and interprets diagnostic tests, prescribes medications, and administers treatments aligned with clinical evaluations.
- Reviews, completes, and evaluates medical records; assigns, reviews, and updates medical classifications; prepares admission notes and discharge summaries, and conducts rounds on patients in infirmaries or regional medical facilities.
- Refers patients to specialists for further consultations, evaluations, and treatments.
- Participates in a rotation with other physicians to provide after-hours and weekend patient care.
- Directly oversees all physicians and physician assistants.
- Manages all operations of the medical department, ensuring compliance with relevant standards, regulations, policies, and court orders.
- Performs various additional duties as assigned.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (Digital Medical Services/Telemedicine):
- Adheres to and supports medical policies and procedures.
- Ensures medical decisions are made fairly and ethically for clients.
- Researches and proposes institutional policies that enhance Digital Medical Services/Telemedicine.
- Contributes to the formulation of health-related policies and standards that facilitate the daily operations of Digital Medical Services/Telemedicine and Electronic Utilization Review.
- Ensures that all review determinations comply with medical protocols and applicable guidelines.
- Actively engages in monitoring client health status, utilization standards, policies, procedures, patient outcomes, and satisfaction.
- Develops strong relationships with colleagues and specialty physicians to ensure high-quality care delivery.
- Participates in Medical Quality Management, reviews quality issues, makes determinations, and assists in implementing interventions to enhance quality.
- Performs other related duties as necessary.

EQUIPMENT:
Standard office and telemedicine equipment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is conducted within correctional facilities. Security clearance and pre-employment drug testing are mandatory.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Must be licensed to practice medicine in Texas with a minimum of ten (10) years of progressive management and patient care experience. Experience in Telemedicine, Electronic Utilization Review, and Quality Improvement is preferred.
Compensation is commensurate with relevant work experience.
