Job Title: Environmental Scientist

Job Summary:

The California Department of Pesticide Regulation's (DPR) Worker Health and Safety (WHS) Branch is seeking a highly motivated individual with an excellent technical and analytical background in environmental and human health sciences for an Environmental Scientist position in the Human Health Mitigation Program (HHMP).

Key Responsibilities:
  • Gather and analyze environmental and human health data to determine potential worker health impacts due to pesticide exposure, develop mitigation measures, and assess their effectiveness.
  • Research the interaction of pesticide chemical and physical properties, use patterns, application methods, and environmental conditions to develop mitigation measures.
  • Participate in field studies and scientific investigations to provide missing data on human health exposure issues associated with pesticides and provide recommendations for increased protection of workers and persons near pesticide applications.
  • Prepare clear, complete, and technically accurate documents and reach sound conclusions to help mitigate pesticide exposure.
  • Participate in outreach and training programs, prepare training materials, make presentations, and respond to questions submitted to DPR following training sessions.
  • Evaluate DPR's Pesticide Worker Safety Program to assure compliance with federal, state, and local worker protection regulations.
  • Evaluate Train-the-Trainer (T2) Program submissions, provide feedback, and periodically audit T2 training courses.
Working Conditions:
  • View a computer monitor for up to 6 hours a day.
  • Work in a high-rise building.
  • Lift office and/or field equipment up to 20 pounds.
  • Be willing to travel to conduct field work throughout California.
  • Occasional overnight travel is required.
  • Occasional work outside in varying temperatures.
  • Exposure to pesticides or pesticide-treated areas may be possible, and appropriate personal protective equipment must be worn.

  • The position requires Medical Clearance prior to being hired.
