The Environmental Compliance Specialist plays a crucial role in overseeing, evaluating, and ensuring adherence to environmental laws concerning air quality, wastewater, stormwater, hazardous substances, and waste management. This position entails performing inspections, managing environmental permits, investigating health-related environmental issues, and formulating strategies to reduce environmental hazards. The Environmental Compliance Specialist will concentrate on regulations specific to California. Key Responsibilities
  • Inspection and Compliance:
    • Perform inspections of facilities and locations to verify compliance with environmental health regulations regarding air quality, wastewater, stormwater, hazardous materials, and waste management.
    • Identify and document infractions, offer recommendations for corrective measures, and follow up to ensure compliance.
    • Issue citations and penalties for non-compliance when necessary.
  • Air Quality Oversight:
    • Monitor emissions from industrial and commercial entities to ensure adherence to air quality standards.
    • Conduct air quality sampling and analysis, developing strategies to mitigate air pollution.
  • Wastewater and Stormwater Oversight:
    • Supervise the management of wastewater and stormwater systems to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
    • Conduct water sampling and testing to detect contaminants and ensure appropriate treatment.
    • Develop and implement stormwater pollution prevention plans (SWPPPs).
  • Hazardous Materials Management:
    • Ensure the correct handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials and waste.
    • Develop and implement hazardous waste management programs and emergency response plans for hazardous material incidents.
    • Conduct risk assessments and formulate plans to minimize exposure to hazardous substances.
  • Environmental Permitting and Reporting:
    • Assist in acquiring and maintaining environmental permits related to air, wastewater, stormwater, and hazardous materials.
    • Prepare comprehensive reports and documentation for regulatory bodies.
    • Maintain precise records of inspections, investigations, and compliance activities.
  • Environmental Health Investigations:
    • Investigate complaints and incidents related to environmental health, such as pollution, hazardous material spills, and compliance issues.
    • Collect and analyze environmental samples to identify potential health risks and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Public Awareness and Outreach:
    • Develop and deliver educational programs and materials to inform the public and stakeholders about environmental health issues and regulations.
    • Conduct community outreach to promote environmental health initiatives and awareness.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
    • Work closely with other health professionals, government agencies, businesses, and community organizations to address environmental health challenges.
    • Provide technical assistance and guidance to stakeholders on environmental health and safety practices.
  • Emergency Response:
    • Participate in emergency response activities related to environmental health hazards, including chemical spills, natural disasters, and pollution incidents.
    • Develop and implement emergency preparedness and response plans.
  • Responsible for team management and mentoring, including project scheduling, timesheet and expense report review & approval, meetings, and administrative management functions.
  • Foster new business opportunities, assist in relationship building, and transition to the Business Development team for sales closure.
  • Stay informed on evolving environmental and safety laws, regulations, and local ordinances, and their potential impact on clients.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • In-depth knowledge of environmental health principles, laws, and regulations related to air quality, wastewater, stormwater, hazardous materials, and waste management in California.
  • Strong analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication and public speaking skills.
  • Proficiency in using environmental testing equipment and software applications.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • High level of computer proficiency, including expertise in all Microsoft Office products.
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health, Environmental Science, or a related field is required.
Experience
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in Environmental Health.
Preferred Certifications
  • Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS)
  • Registered Environmental Manager (REM)
  • Trainer of Record (ToR)
  • Qualified Industrial Stormwater Practitioner (QISP)
  • ICC California UST System Operator (DO)
Compensation: $95,000 to $125,000 annually, depending on experience and certifications held. Travel is required 60% of the time, with expenses covered by the company.
