Department Overview

The History Department at San Jose State University serves as a dynamic hub for nearly 300 undergraduate and graduate History students, alongside numerous others enrolled in foundational History courses that satisfy General Education and American Institutions graduation criteria.

With a dedicated team of nine full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty members and fourteen part-time or full-time lecturers, we provide a comprehensive curriculum that spans various global regions and historical periods.

We are consistently in search of qualified History educators capable of instructing lower-division survey courses, as well as occasional upper-division classes.

Position Summary

We are looking for qualified lecturers to teach courses in European and World History on a part-time, temporary basis, contingent upon departmental requirements.

Candidates should anticipate teaching in-person on campus.

Preference will be given to candidates with prior teaching experience in European and/or World History at the post-secondary level.

Instructors will be expected to prepare and deliver courses in accordance with departmental guidelines and General Education standards.

Responsibilities include:

  • Developing compliant syllabi and course materials.
  • Conducting scheduled class sessions.
  • Meeting with students as necessary.
  • Utilizing Canvas and other relevant instructional technologies.
  • Participating in faculty and college meetings.
  • Maintaining accurate student records, including enrollment, attendance, grades, and assessments.
  • Adhering to all university policies and guidelines.

Instructors should demonstrate an understanding of and responsiveness to a diverse student body, which includes various ages, abilities, cultural backgrounds, ethnicities, religions, economic statuses, primary languages, sexual orientations, gender identities, and academic preparations. This should be reflected in inclusive course materials and teaching methodologies.

All courses must be organized within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), which is the official platform for the SJSU community. It is essential that all classes, regardless of format, are anchored in Canvas to facilitate faculty-student interaction.

Classes must be conducted as scheduled throughout the entire semester or term, in the designated format (i.e., asynchronous, synchronous, hybrid, or in-person).

Required Qualifications
  • Master's degree in European and/or World History.
  • Doctorate in European and/or World History (required for teaching upper-division or graduate courses numbered 100 or above).
  • A minimum of one year of teaching experience in European and/or World History at the post-secondary level.
  • Familiarity with the Canvas learning management system.
  • Ability to effectively teach and assess adult learners.
  • Evidence of satisfactory academic performance.

Applicants should exhibit an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational objectives of a multicultural student population, which may have been developed through cross-cultural studies, training, teaching, or similar experiences.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with the Canvas learning management system.
  • Proven ability to teach and evaluate adult learners.
Compensation

Salary and compensation will be determined based on qualifications and experience. For more information regarding salary placement, please refer to university policy.

Anticipated Salary Ranges:

  • L-A: $4530 - $5405
  • L-B: $5405 - $6786
  • L-C: $6190 - $8554
  • L-D: $7794 - $9385

Note that the above salary ranges represent the anticipated monthly salary for full-time academic year faculty, with part-time rates prorated accordingly.
