Department Overview
The History Department at San Jose State University serves as a dynamic hub for nearly 300 undergraduate and graduate students majoring in History, along with numerous others enrolled in survey courses that satisfy General Education and American Institutions requirements. Our faculty consists of nine full-time tenured or tenure-track members and fourteen part-time or full-time lecturers. We provide a diverse range of courses encompassing various global regions and historical periods. We continuously seek qualified instructors to teach lower-division survey courses and, occasionally, upper-division classes.
Position Summary
We are in search of qualified lecturers to instruct European and World History courses on a part-time, temporary basis, contingent upon departmental needs. Candidates should be prepared to teach in-person, on campus.
Key Responsibilities
- Preferred candidates will have experience teaching European and/or World History at the post-secondary level.
- Instructors must be ready to teach assigned courses in accordance with departmental guidelines and General Education standards.
- Responsibilities include developing compliant syllabi and course materials, conducting scheduled classes, meeting with students as necessary, utilizing Canvas and other instructional technologies, attending faculty meetings, maintaining student records, and adhering to all university policies.
- Demonstrate an understanding of and responsiveness to a diverse student population, including various backgrounds and identities, through inclusive teaching practices.
- All courses must be organized within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), ensuring a consistent online platform for student engagement.
- Classes must be conducted as scheduled throughout the semester, adhering to the designated format (e.g., asynchronous, synchronous, in-person, or hybrid).
Qualifications
- Master's degree in European and/or World History.
- Ph.D. in European and/or World History is required for teaching upper-division or graduate courses.
- A minimum of one year of teaching experience in European and/or World History at the post-secondary level.
- Familiarity with the Canvas learning management system.
- Ability to effectively teach and assess adult learners, with evidence of satisfactory academic performance.
- Applicants should exhibit awareness and sensitivity to the educational needs of a multicultural student body.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with the Canvas learning management system.
- Proficiency in teaching and evaluating adult learners.
Compensation
