Department Overview

The Department of Art and Art History, established in 1911, provides BA, BFA, MA, and MFA degrees and holds accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). We offer prospective students a distinguished faculty and exceptional technical and administrative support; a premier combination of facilities for creating, showcasing, and studying art across various media; a dedication to fostering creative and analytical thinking; opportunities for innovative practice across disciplines; and a welcoming and supportive environment.

Position Responsibilities

The selected candidate will instruct one or more new undergraduate seminars in Art: "The Artist in Contemporary Culture" and "Medium and Message." These courses will feature a hybrid format, incorporating substantial studio components and will be mandatory for all Art students. Participation in departmental meetings and assessment activities is expected.

The ideal candidate will promote critical thinking and iterative concept development within class assignments. An interest in interdisciplinary collaboration with colleagues across all programs within the Department of Art and Art History is highly valued. We seek artists and scholars eager to contribute to curriculum development.

Applicants must demonstrate an understanding of the diverse needs of a student population characterized by a wide range of ages, cultural backgrounds, ethnicities, primary languages, and academic preparations through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.

All faculty members are required to organize their courses within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), the official LMS for the institution. All classes, whether online or in-person, must utilize the Canvas platform to ensure a consistent faculty-student connection, as all students are directed to access their courses through Canvas.

Qualifications

Applicants should possess a Master of Fine Arts degree or Ph.D. in Art History, Visual Culture, or a related field, along with significant experience teaching studio art at the university level. A clear demonstration of artistic and/or scholarly achievement is essential, evidenced by a substantial portfolio of creative work and research interests. Familiarity with emerging areas of artistic practice and theory, as well as the ability to effectively direct and assess student writing, is required. Candidates should also be able to deconstruct texts and make them accessible to undergraduate students, demonstrating awareness and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population.
