Department Overview

The History Department at San Jose State University serves as a dynamic hub for nearly 300 undergraduate and graduate students majoring in History, alongside numerous others enrolled in foundational History courses that satisfy General Education and American Institutions graduation criteria. Our faculty comprises nine full-time tenured or tenure-track educators and fourteen part-time or full-time lecturers, offering a diverse range of courses that span global history across all eras.

Position Summary

We are in search of qualified lecturers to instruct U.S. history courses on a part-time, temporary basis, contingent upon departmental requirements. Available courses include HIST 15: Essentials of U.S. History and HIST 170S: American Identities & Institutions. HIST 15 is a 3-unit, lower-division survey course that meets the American Institutions graduation requirement (Area US1), while HIST 170S is a 3-unit, upper-division course fulfilling both the US1 requirement and the Area S: Self, Society, and Equality in SJSU Studies. Candidates should be prepared to teach in-person on campus.

Key Responsibilities

  • Preference will be given to candidates with prior experience teaching U.S. History.
  • Instructors must be ready to teach courses as assigned by the department chair, adhering to course descriptions and General Education standards.
  • Responsibilities include developing compliant syllabi and course materials, conducting scheduled class sessions, meeting with students as necessary, utilizing Canvas and other instructional technologies, attending faculty and college meetings, maintaining student records (enrollment, attendance, grades, and assessments), and following all CSU and SJSU policies.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and address the diverse needs of a student body, which includes various ages, abilities, cultural backgrounds, ethnicities, religions, economic statuses, primary languages, sexual orientations, gender identities, and academic preparations through inclusive teaching materials and strategies.
  • All courses must be organized within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), the official platform for the SJSU community. Faculty will have access to this system prior to the semester start date.
  • Classes must be conducted as scheduled throughout the semester or term, in the designated format (asynchronous, synchronous, bichronous, in-person, or hybrid).

Qualifications

  • MA or PhD in U.S. History.
  • At least one year of teaching experience in U.S. History at the post-secondary level (community college, four-year college, or university).
  • Applicants should show awareness and sensitivity to the educational objectives of a multicultural student population, which may have been developed through cross-cultural studies, training, teaching, or similar experiences.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in U.S. History (required for HIST 170S).
  • Familiarity with the Canvas learning management system.

Compensation

Faculty members must complete assigned CSU employee training based on their roles (e.g., preventing discrimination and harassment, gender equity and Title IX, health and safety). The faculty member in this role will be subject to ongoing review for designation as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) and must report Clery incidents as required.
