Department Overview

The Department of Art and Art History, established in 1911, provides BA, BFA, MA, and MFA programs and holds accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). We offer prospective students a distinguished faculty and exceptional technical and administrative support; state-of-the-art facilities for creating, exhibiting, and researching art across various media; a commitment to fostering creative and critical thinking; opportunities for innovative practice across disciplines; and a welcoming and supportive community.

Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will instruct one or more undergraduate seminars in Art, focusing on topics such as "The Artist in Contemporary Culture" and "Medium and Message." These seminars will incorporate a hybrid format, combining seminar discussions with a significant studio component, and will be mandatory for all Art students. Participation in departmental meetings and assessment activities is essential.

The ideal candidate will promote critical thinking and iterative concept development in class assignments. An interest in interdisciplinary collaboration with colleagues across all programs within the Department of Art and Art History is advantageous. We seek artists and scholars eager to contribute to curriculum development.

Applicants must demonstrate an understanding of the diverse needs of a student population, including variations in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language, and academic preparation, through inclusive course materials and teaching strategies.

All faculty members are expected to utilize the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), the official platform for the academic community. All courses, whether online or in-person, must be integrated into the Canvas system to facilitate faculty-student interaction.

Qualifications Required

A Master of Fine Arts degree or Ph.D. in Art History, Visual Culture, or a related field, with substantial experience teaching studio art at the university level; a clear record of artistic and/or scholarly accomplishments, evidenced by a significant portfolio of creative work and research interests; familiarity with emerging trends in artistic practice and theory; proficiency in reading and writing at an advanced level; and the ability to make complex texts accessible to undergraduate students. Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to the educational objectives of a multicultural student body is essential.

Conditional Appointment

Please note that this appointment is contingent upon budgetary and enrollment considerations.

Salary Range - Commensurate with experience.
