Modern Hydrogen is actively seeking a Senior Manufacturing Engineer to enhance our Design for Manufacturability / Design for Assembly (DFM/DFA) capabilities. As a vital member of our Product Development team, you will collaborate closely with internal technical teams. Your role will involve supporting the production, design, fabrication, and assembly of our innovative commercial products.

This position requires on-site presence at our Woodinville, WA facility for more than four days each week, along with participation in quarterly company events aimed at strengthening colleague connections and fostering a vibrant team culture.

As a Seattle-based cleantech startup, Modern Hydrogen is dedicated to transforming natural gas into clean hydrogen at the point of use. Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop scalable manufacturing systems to facilitate the volume expansion of new products, including build plans, assembly documentation, and tracking tools.
  • Plan, document, and oversee manufacturing and assembly operations.
  • Provide engineering support through DFM/A insights, guiding cost, design, and functionality trade-offs.
  • Implement best practices in manufacturing to enhance design, assembly, and process documentation, thereby improving efficiency and yield.
  • Maintain strong relationships with vendors, service providers, machine shops, and contract manufacturers to enhance internal capabilities.
  • Manage manufacturing cost models for products.
  • Collaborate with leadership to shape the company's manufacturing strategy.
  • Educate the team on DFM/DFA methodologies and quality best practices to boost quality while reducing build time and costs.
  • Contribute to the development of assembly tooling.
  • Travel up to 10% to engage with vendors and customers.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
  • Over 15 years of experience in product development or manufacturing, preferably in a deep tech/hardware context involving containerized energy systems or modular process skids.
  • Experience in establishing and designing pilot manufacturing lines for energy systems.
  • Proficient in managing manufacturing and assembly projects, including monitoring schedules and resolving issues.
  • Strong understanding of assembly and manufacturing processes for containerized energy systems or modular chemical process skids, including:

1) Assembly of chemical reactors and related unit operations.

2) Welding and assembly of structural components and piping.

3) Assembly of electrical and control systems.

4) Handling, aligning, and positioning large components.

5) Relevant quality assurance processes, including dimensional inspection and leak testing.

  • Experience with mechanical quality control techniques (e.g., laser tracking, CMM, tolerance checks, and SPC).
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles.
  • Expertise in design for manufacturability and assembly.
  • Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with vendors, engineering teams, and supply chain personnel.
  • Exceptional problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and MS Project.
  • Enthusiasm for working within a collaborative, dynamic, and diverse team environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with ASME B31 process gas codes and NFPA fire safety codes relevant to equipment assembly and manufacturing.
  • Six Sigma Green or Black Belt certification.
  • Hands-on experience with CAD tools, preferably SolidWorks.
  • Experience in a startup setting.
