Position Overview:

A Lead Architectural Strategist will oversee, guide, and manage all facets of architectural design services on multi-disciplinary building design initiatives of moderate to large scale for commercial and governmental projects.

With extensive knowledge and experience accumulated throughout their career, a Lead Architectural Strategist will effectively apply their design expertise and organizational capabilities to their designated projects. They will act as a mentor and role model for architectural support personnel and engage in corporate initiatives aimed at enhancing the design quality of our projects and the methodologies employed during design, documentation, and construction administration phases.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Executing comprehensive architectural design responsibilities, including conceptual studies, programming, schematic documents, design development documents, and construction documents.
  • Independently leading and executing projects of significant complexity.
  • Engaging with clients to define and validate the proposed scope of services.
  • Assisting in the presentation of projects to clients, contractors, project team members, and public stakeholders throughout all project phases.
  • Managing the architectural components of multi-disciplinary projects and collaborating with assigned Project Managers to achieve project budget, schedule, goals, and objectives.
  • Working closely with Project Managers to implement project plans effectively.
  • Coordinating with Project Managers to supervise the design and technical delivery of the team.
  • Overseeing, coordinating, and communicating all aspects of architectural design within multi-disciplinary teams to ensure proper integration of architectural details with other disciplines.
  • Maintaining communication with contractors on Design-Build projects to confirm the suitability of selected systems.
  • Directly communicating with clients to present technical and design solutions.
  • Supervising the work of Architects, Interns, and Designers assigned to the project.
  • Managing architectural support services related to the bidding process, including preparing addenda and amendments, and overseeing bid openings and tabulations.
  • Overseeing architectural support services during the construction phase, including site visits, responding to RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and preparing record drawings.
  • Ensuring compliance with quality control policies and procedures among staff.
  • Collaborating with Managing Principals, Project Managers, Design Managers, and senior management.
  • Actively participating in marketing and business development initiatives.
  • Establishing and nurturing positive client relationships.
  • Providing technical guidance to architectural staff.
  • Mentoring and supporting the professional growth of architectural staff.
  • Assisting Department Directors and Heads in refining processes and procedures.
  • Representing the Managing Principal, Project Manager, or Department Head in their absence.
  • Leading training sessions for staff.
  • Contributing to annual performance reviews for staff.
  • Skilled in presenting technical and design solutions directly to clients.
  • Collaborating closely with Project Managers to implement project plans and oversee the team's design and technical delivery.
  • May involve HR responsibilities such as staff reviews and financial decisions.
  • Proficient in monitoring projects to uphold quality and production standards in design and contract documents.
  • Experienced in managing project-team personnel and contributing to the establishment and implementation of firm goals, values, and long-term growth strategies.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Architecture from an NAAB-accredited program or a Master's of Architecture from an NAAB-accredited program.
  • Must be a fully licensed Architect in at least one US state, preferably in the local jurisdiction.
  • NCARB certification preferred to facilitate licensure through reciprocity.
  • Possession of additional professional and sustainability certifications is advantageous.
  • Understanding of sustainable design principles and practices, with LEED AP accreditation preferred.
  • Additional certifications such as CDT, CCS, or CCCA are encouraged to reflect ongoing professional development.
  • A minimum of 12 years of significant design and practice experience in a leadership role within an architectural firm or a multi-discipline Architectural & Engineering firm.
  • Experience as a lead designer or Architect in various project types, including federal, state, municipal, healthcare, commercial, and higher education projects.
  • Strong history of leading design development for academic research facilities, biotechnology research & development facilities, and other Life Sciences-related building typologies.

Additional Skills:

  • Ability to lead project teams effectively.
  • Familiarity with design, modeling, and graphic software (Revit, Rhino, Enscape, Adobe Creative Cloud, etc.).
  • Advanced understanding of architectural construction and contract documents.
  • Knowledge of basic codes and sustainability requirements and their implementation.
  • Collaborative approach to developing and managing design budgets and schedules.
  • Commitment to fostering and developing team members professionally.
  • Proven ability to build client relationships and support business development activities.
  • Recognized as an architectural leader or subject matter expert within the firm and by clients.
  • Strong presentation, public speaking, writing, and business correspondence skills.
  • Active participation in professional and community organizations.
