Job Summary

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Recreational Therapist III to join our team at the Chelsea Veterans Home. As a key member of our interdisciplinary team, you will play a vital role in developing and implementing therapeutic recreation programs for our veteran residents.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with staff to develop individualized and group therapeutic activities that promote social skills and overall well-being.
  • Plan and organize recreational, social, and instructional activities that cater to the diverse needs and interests of our residents.
  • Participate in staff meetings and contribute to the development of therapeutic objectives and goals.
  • Prepare reports and summaries of recreational activities programs and results.
  • Motivate residents to participate in recreation activities, adapting to their varying levels of impairment.
  • Complete employee performance reviews for direct reporting staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Knowledge of motivational and reinforcement techniques.
  • Understanding of therapeutic recreation principles and techniques.
  • Awareness of factors, trends, and problems in providing recreation services to special client groups.
  • Knowledge of adapted physical education principles and techniques.
  • Understanding of materials and equipment used in recreational activities.
  • Knowledge of counseling methods and techniques applied to therapeutic activities.
  • Ability to interact with individuals under physical and/or emotional stress.
  • Ability to prepare general reports.
  • Ability to plan and conduct training and instruction.
  • Ability to give clear oral instruction.
  • Ability to exercise leadership in group situations.
  • Ability to establish rapport with individuals from diverse ethnic, cultural, and economic backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines governing assigned unit activities.
  • Knowledge of public and private organizations and sources for providing recreation services.
  • Knowledge of first aid techniques.
  • Knowledge of curriculum development methods and techniques for therapeutic recreation activities.
