The DEQ has an opening for a Soil Scientist (Natural Resource Specialist 4). This position offers flexibility in work location within the state.
Join a forward-thinking team and contribute to our mission of improving Oregon's environmental quality. Our regions provide essential services such as compliance inspections, permit enforcement, and technical assistance to both regulated entities and the public.
This role is part of the Statewide Groundwater Protection Program (SGPP), located in the Eastern Region, and plays a crucial role in supporting the department's Land and Water Quality initiatives. Responsibilities include conducting hydroreviews for various permits and overseeing Groundwater Management Areas (GWMA).
Key Responsibilities:
- Act as the statewide expert in agronomy for land application activities, providing technical support for water and land quality programs.
- Serve as the soil science subject matter expert for permitting staff and represent the agency in various taskforces and advisory committees.
- Conduct independent investigations of complex facilities to assess wastewater disposal and beneficial use applications.
- Provide compliance assurance and enforcement for both industrial and domestic sewage sources, addressing water pollution complaints.

Qualifications:
Applicants should possess a Bachelor's degree in physical science, environmental science, natural resources, or a related field, along with 4 years of relevant experience. Experience in a natural resource program and technical activities is preferred.
Competitive candidates will demonstrate:
- An understanding of environmental justice and its impacts on marginalized communities.
- Experience in agronomy, including soil conditions and crop suitability.
- Knowledge of NPDES and WPCF regulations and experience in permit development.
- Strong communication and analytical skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly.
- Experience in building relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Experience in conducting site investigations and inspections.
Work Environment:
