The DEQ has an exciting full-time opportunity for a Soil Scientist (Natural Resource Specialist 4). This position offers flexibility in work location.

Join an innovative team committed to advancing our mission of protecting and enhancing Oregon's environmental quality. Our regions provide essential services, including compliance inspections, enforcement of regulations, permit issuance, complaint investigations, and technical assistance.

This role is part of the Statewide Groundwater Protection Program (SGPP), located in the Eastern Region, supporting Land and Water Quality permitting and Groundwater Protection sections. Responsibilities include conducting hydroreviews for various permits and overseeing Groundwater Management Areas (GWMA).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as the statewide expert in agronomy for land application activities, providing technical support for water and land quality initiatives.
  • Serve as the soil science authority for NPDES and WPCF permitting staff, and represent the agency in legal and negotiation contexts related to land application and water quality.
  • Conduct independent investigations of complex sites to assess wastewater disposal systems and their adequacy in protecting public health and environmental quality.
  • Provide compliance assurance and enforcement for sewage sources, addressing water pollution complaints.

Qualifications:

Minimum requirements include a Bachelor's degree in physical science, environmental science, natural resources, or a related field, along with 4 years of relevant experience. Candidates with experience in agronomy, environmental justice, and strong communication skills will be highly competitive.
