POSITION SUMMARY
The Peer Recovery Support Specialist I plays a vital role in delivering peer recovery support services to individuals engaged in substance use disorder (SUD) and mental health programs across various settings, including inpatient, residential, and outpatient care. These support services encompass educational workshops, motivational coaching, patient engagement, transportation assistance, advocacy, and the coordination of essential services aimed at fostering recovery, resilience, and independence.

WORK SCHEDULE
Outpatient services require 8-hour shifts, 5 days a week, with flexible scheduling available, operating 24/7.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct orientation for new patients, including a tour of the facility and distribution of informational materials.
- Assist with data entry related to patient admissions and discharges as needed.
- Monitor and supervise patient activities to ensure safety and compliance, including regular census counts during overnight shifts.
- Perform necessary searches of patients in accordance with established policies and maintain required certifications.
- Administer urine analysis testing in line with agency protocols.
- Oversee medication distribution for inpatient and residential units.
- Support the maintenance of cleanliness within the unit by encouraging patients to take responsibility for their environment.
- Collaborate with the treatment team to integrate health services across mental health, SUD, housing, and primary care.
- Promote patient engagement and self-management strategies to enhance wellness and recovery.
- Equip patients with coping mechanisms and problem-solving skills for managing their behavioral health needs.
- Assist patients in recognizing and leveraging their strengths and resilience.
- Facilitate the development of community living skills and resource utilization through guided discussions and activities.
- Participate in mandatory training sessions and staff meetings, committing to ongoing professional development.
- Communicate effectively with team members regarding patient behaviors and progress.
- Exhibit professionalism in appearance, language, and conduct.
- Demonstrate understanding and support for the agency's mission and objectives.
- Conduct safety checks during shift changes.
- Provide transportation and escort services for patients to various activities.
- Offer continuous recovery support in areas such as 12-step programs, housing, vocational training, and community services.
- Maintain confidentiality in accordance with agency policies and legal requirements.
- Encourage independent decision-making among patients.
- Provide consistent support to patients during both routine and challenging times.
- Assist patients in overcoming negative self-perceptions and fears.
- Serve as a role model for wellness and recovery, offering mutual and respectful peer support.
- Adhere to ethical standards and respect patient rights.
- Share personal recovery experiences in a way that inspires hope while maintaining professional boundaries.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Valid Class C or Class B driver's license (if applicable)
- Proficient in computer usage
- Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist Certification (PSSC)
- At least 1 year of experience in behavioral healthcare or peer support services.
