Position Overview

ROLE SUMMARY

The Peer Support Specialist I plays a vital role in delivering recovery-oriented support services to individuals engaged in substance use disorder (SUD) and mental health treatment across various program levels, including inpatient, residential, and outpatient settings. These support services encompass educational sessions, motivational coaching, patient engagement, transportation assistance, advocacy, and the coordination of essential services that foster recovery, resilience, and independence.

WORK SCHEDULE

Outpatient Services: 8 hours per day, 5 days a week, with flexible scheduling available, operating 24/7.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Facilitate orientation for new patients, including a tour of the facility and distribution of essential materials.
  2. Assist with data entry for patient admissions and discharges as required.
  3. Monitor and supervise patient activities to ensure safety and compliance, including conducting regular census counts.
  4. Conduct thorough searches of patients in line with established protocols and maintain certification in these procedures.
  5. Administer urine analysis testing in accordance with policy and maintain necessary certifications.
  6. Oversee medication distribution for inpatient and residential units.
  7. Support the cleanliness of the unit by guiding patients in maintaining their living spaces.
  8. Collaborate with the treatment team to integrate health services across mental health, SUD, housing, and primary care.
  9. Encourage patient engagement and self-management strategies to enhance wellness and recovery.
  10. Provide education and resources to help patients develop coping strategies and manage their behavioral health needs.
  11. Assist patients in recognizing and leveraging their strengths and resilience.
  12. Support patients in acquiring community living skills and utilizing available resources.
  13. Participate in training sessions and staff meetings, committing to ongoing professional development.
  14. Communicate effectively with team members regarding patient progress and activities.
  15. Maintain professionalism in conduct, appearance, and communication.
  16. Demonstrate knowledge of and support for the agency's mission and objectives.
  17. Conduct safety checks during shift changes.
  18. Provide transportation and escort services for patients during activities.
  19. Offer continuous recovery support in areas such as 12-step programs, housing, and vocational training.
  20. Uphold patient confidentiality in accordance with agency policies and legal standards.
  21. Encourage independent decision-making among patients.
  22. Exhibit consistency in support during both routine and challenging times.
  23. Assist patients in overcoming negative self-perceptions and developing problem-solving skills.
  24. Serve as a role model for wellness and recovery, providing mutual and respectful peer support.
  25. Adhere to ethical standards and respect patient rights.
  26. Share personal recovery experiences in a manner that inspires hope while maintaining professional boundaries.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Class C or Class B Driver's License (if required)
  • Proficient in computer usage
  • Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist Certification (PSSC)
  • At least 1 year of experience in behavioral healthcare or peer support services.
