Nuclear Safety Research Engineer

At Southwest Research Institute, we are dedicated to enhancing the safety of nuclear energy and the nuclear fuel cycle, especially as the global community considers expanding nuclear power's contribution to energy sustainability and reducing carbon emissions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct technical assessments for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and other stakeholders to ensure the safety of nuclear installations, management of nuclear materials, and disposal of radioactive waste.
- Perform independent calculations and simulations to support nuclear safety evaluations.
- Assist in the development of proposals and engage in business development initiatives relevant to your technical expertise.
- Provide expert knowledge in nuclear safety for technical and regulatory evaluations of nuclear fuel cycle facilities and associated operations, including conversion, enrichment, fabrication, storage, transportation, reprocessing, and disposal.
- Analyze regulations and guidance documents to determine their relevance to various advanced and accident-tolerant nuclear fuels.
- Enhance reviews with independent analyses, including calculations and modeling.
- Contribute to the preparation of detailed reports.
- Support efforts in business development.
- A Master's or PhD in Nuclear Engineering or a related engineering discipline with a focus on nuclear applications is required.
- 0 years of experience with a PhD, provided it includes a relevant dissertation.
- A minimum of 1 year of experience with an MS degree in nuclear fuels and materials is necessary. Candidates must pass a conflict of interest evaluation.
- Desirable experience includes knowledge of nuclear fuel cycle facility safety, nuclear codes (such as inventory physics, shielding, and criticality), radioactive waste management, and nuclear power plant operations and safety.
- Strong writing and communication skills are essential. Candidates should be independent thinkers capable of working autonomously or collaboratively under varying levels of supervision.
- Due to contract requirements, candidates must be U.S. citizens or have held U.S. Permanent Residency for at least 5 years.
All candidates must successfully pass a conflict of interest evaluation and meet the qualifications for NRC clearance.
