About Us:

At Southwest Research Institute, our radiation effects laboratory specializes in the handling and management of radioactive materials for various clients, including government entities. We focus on irradiating materials for research purposes and providing comprehensive training on the safe handling of radioactive substances.



Key Responsibilities:
  • Transition into a supervisory role to oversee daily operations within the radiation effects laboratory.
  • Implement mechanical and electrical enhancements to an aging facility, ensuring improved safety and security measures.
  • Assist in remote source handling and the loading and unloading of devices.
  • Oversee and support radioactive material inventories, security documentation, safety evaluations, and maintenance records.
  • Contribute to training initiatives and provide additional support as required.


Daily and Monthly Duties:
  • Supervise and support laboratory personnel in radiation effects operations.
  • Manage the shipping and receiving processes for all radioactive materials entering and exiting the Institute.
  • Engage in the meticulous documentation required for the handling of radioactive materials, including compliance reporting to federal and state authorities.
  • Act as project manager for irradiation initiatives, encompassing bid preparation, development of planning and work instructions, execution of irradiation processes, and compilation of final reports, adhering to 10CFR50 Appendix B QA/QC standards.
  • Support high-level source handling projects, including the maintenance of laboratory equipment and facilities, and contribute to the drafting and review of nuclear regulatory guidance documents as necessary.


Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Nuclear Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in project management, client engagement, price quotation development, and technical report writing.
  • 5 years of experience in a highly regulated work environment, including adherence to 18-point QA/QC programs such as NQA-1 or 10CFR part 50 appendix B, as well as security protocols like 10CFR part 37.
  • 5 years of experience in the handling and management of radioactive materials, with a preference for experience in remote handling.
  • 5 years of experience with radiation, shielding, and neutronics modeling codes is advantageous. Familiarity with nuclear fuels processing and management is a plus.
  • A valid driver's license is mandatory.
