The Safety & Industrial Hygiene division is dedicated to safeguarding the health and safety of our workforce. This is achieved through comprehensive hazard evaluations, risk reduction strategies, engineering controls, ongoing enhancement initiatives, and strict adherence to regulatory standards.



Key Responsibilities:
  • Evaluate potential workplace hazards within research initiatives and develop measures to minimize employee exposure and prevent accidents.
  • Conduct project assessments emphasizing Process Safety Management, hazard identification, and risk mitigation through engineering solutions.
  • Enhance safety protocols at Southwest Research Institute to ensure robust employee protection.
  • Collaborate with teams to execute safety and health programs and guarantee compliance with regulations.


Daily and Monthly Tasks:
  • Facilitate or engage in risk assessments for workplaces and projects to identify, analyze, and address risks.
  • Organize and deliver training on risk analysis methodologies as needed.
  • Supervise the application of Process Safety Management (PSM) protocols when necessary and partner with Program Managers to implement PSM best practices in projects that fall below PSM thresholds.
  • Utilize knowledge of chemistry and physics to evaluate projects, ensuring the mitigation of hazardous conditions and confirming the compatibility of materials used to protect personnel from emissions or exposures.
  • Support Incident Investigation teams in analyzing and categorizing safety incidents, and assist in developing process tools and action plans to address identified Process Safety deficiencies.
  • Provide Emergency Response assistance as required.
  • Design and deliver safety training for Institute staff focusing on process safety and OSHA regulations.


Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Process Safety, Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, or Public Health is required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in Process Safety Management, Hazard Analyses, OSHA compliance, and/or Industrial Hygiene.
  • At least 3 years of knowledge in chemistry and its implications for processes and potential employee exposures.
  • 3 years of solid experience in chemical and engineering principles, along with integrated risk assessments addressing safety, health, and environmental protection.
  • A valid and clear driver’s license is mandatory.


Additional Requirements:

The selected candidate will undergo a government security investigation and must fulfill eligibility criteria for access to classified information. U.S. citizenship is required.
