About Us:


At Southwest Research Institute, we are dedicated to enhancing the safety of nuclear energy and the associated fuel cycle during a pivotal time when the global community is exploring the expanded role of nuclear power in fulfilling energy demands while mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with geologists, geophysicists, and geotechnical engineers to perform probabilistic seismic hazard evaluations for essential facilities, particularly in the nuclear sector, both domestically and internationally.
  • Analyze technical data concerning seismic sources derived from earthquake records, paleoseismology, structural geology, and neotectonics.
  • Engage with a diverse team to synthesize probabilistic seismic hazard results into engineering practices and risk evaluations.

Daily Tasks:
  • Employ advanced software and methodologies to create seismic source and ground motion models, while assessing the uncertainties tied to these models.
  • Remain informed on the latest advancements in seismology, earthquake engineering, and hazard assessment, integrating new techniques into ongoing projects.
  • Draft detailed reports and presentations tailored for both technical and non-technical stakeholders, simplifying complex concepts for better understanding.
  • Offer expert guidance to clients, regulatory bodies, and internal teams regarding seismic hazard evaluations.
  • Contribute to business development initiatives.

Qualifications:
  • A PhD in Seismology, Geophysics, or a related discipline is required.
  • Experience in probabilistic seismic hazard analysis, particularly with seismic source models, including active faults and earthquake records.
  • Proficiency in software applications such as OpenQuake, SeisRiskIII, and other industry-standard tools.
  • Familiarity with programming languages like Python, MATLAB, or similar is essential. A history of publications and contributions to seismological research is highly regarded.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, capable of conveying technical information to varied audiences.
  • A collaborative spirit and the ability to manage projects independently are crucial.
  • Due to contract requirements, candidates must be U.S. citizens or have held U.S. Permanent Residency for a minimum of five years.
  • A valid driver's license is mandatory.
