Role Summary

We are in search of a fully bilingual (Spanish/English) and driven Spanish Teacher. This role presents a unique opportunity to contribute to a school that prioritizes the needs of English Language Learners while promoting bilingualism and biliteracy. The Spanish Teacher will play a crucial role in implementing our vision for student achievement by effectively utilizing available resources to address school-wide objectives and further the mission of the American Dream School in essential areas such as core instructional programs, comprehensive behavioral support services, and enhanced learning opportunities.

Reporting Structure: Reports to the High School Director

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English, Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Spanish or a related field; Master's degree preferred
  • New York State Teaching Certification for grades 7-12 or Special Education 7-12 (or an active Teaching Certification from another US state)
  • Strong organizational skills, with proficiency in data tracking and analysis
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, meet deadlines, and complete tasks with accuracy
  • Proficient in technology; experience with Microsoft Office, Gmail, Google Docs/Drive
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Results-oriented with a strong sense of urgency
  • Open to feedback and committed to ongoing professional development

Key Responsibilities:

Instructional Duties

  • Design and implement a rigorous and innovative Spanish and Foreign Language curriculum that fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Create engaging lesson plans that align with the American Dream curriculum and Common Core standards.
  • Maintain high behavioral expectations for students and consistently apply the school's behavior management strategies.
  • Utilize assessment data from Illuminate Education to inform instruction and ensure mastery of academic standards.
  • Employ a co-teaching model to effectively support diverse learning needs.
  • Encourage a sense of urgency in the learning process.
  • Assist in the administration, collection, and evaluation of tests and homework.
  • Develop meaningful interim assessments to prepare students for success on standardized exams.
  • Keep accurate records and generate reports as needed.
  • Create a welcoming and inclusive classroom environment through Responsive Classroom practices.
  • Take responsibility for the academic progress of students and actively work to overcome challenges.

Advisory Role

  • Act as an advisor for a group of students, supporting their academic and personal growth.
  • Provide guidance that promotes college and career readiness, including programming for Regents diploma and Seal of Biliteracy requirements.
  • Serve as the primary contact for parents/guardians of advisees.
  • Collaborate with fellow teachers to plan community meetings and develop a robust advisory curriculum.
  • Encourage students who may be reluctant to complete their assignments.
  • Complete intervention documentation for students at risk of promotion issues.

Student Support Services

  • Prepare academic performance reports for staff and administrators.
  • Provide tutoring and support to students in individual or small group settings.
  • Establish annual goals for students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Monitor and implement IEP goals relevant to your subject area.
  • Write progress reports for students as required.
  • Participate in annual IEP meetings.
  • Set appropriate goals and make necessary modifications for each student.

Additional Professional Responsibilities

  • Teach an elective course, assist with credit recovery, or serve as an advisor for a student club.
  • Engage in grade-level meetings, collaborative planning, and professional development activities.
  • Participate in parent-teacher conferences regarding student progress.
  • Supervise students in various settings, ensuring adherence to school values and policies.
  • Instruct students on the proper use and care of educational materials and equipment.
  • Assist with lunch duties as necessary.
  • Contribute to the professional growth of colleagues through peer observations and feedback.
  • Support the efficient operation of the school by fulfilling administrative duties and maintaining proactive communication with colleagues.
  • Create and maintain displays to showcase student achievements.
  • Engage in peer observations to enhance teaching practices.
