General Overview: The Sustainability Program Coordinator is tasked with acquiring knowledge, operating, maintaining, and demonstrating the use of plastics recycling machinery at the designated lab and in collaboration with partner organizations. This role involves fostering positive relationships with rural partner communities, assisting in community cleanup initiatives, and guiding community members through the recycling program's procedures. The Coordinator will collaborate with Fabrication Lab Instructors to create Culturally Relevant Instructional (CRI) Recycling Modules for communities to implement with their participants, and will conduct training sessions on equipment and program processes both in rural areas and at the designated lab. Additionally, this position will be responsible for administering surveys and gathering data throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish and nurture positive relationships with partner communities and engaged community members.
  • Design and develop training modules and processes related to recycling.
  • Assist in creating virtual training resources for new community members to access recycling training materials promptly.
  • Revise and adapt educational units focused on recycling for K-12 students in collaboration with Fabrication Lab Instructors.
  • Test and refine recycling educational units with students at the designated lab, ensuring they meet program needs with support from Fabrication Lab Instructors.
  • Ensure that recycling program process modules and educational units are accessible on the organization's website.
  • Support community members in implementing relevant recycling units with students at local educational institutions, in partnership with Fabrication Lab Instructors.
  • Ensure that educational recycling units are STEM-oriented, innovative, engaging, and culturally relevant, including tracking the weight of collected and processed plastic materials.
  • Utilize innovative and culturally responsive instructional methods that align with Native learning styles.
  • Assist partner communities in organizing and executing community recycling events and cleanup days.
  • Deliver comprehensive training on recycling machinery, both on-site in rural partner communities and at the designated lab, with assistance from Fabrication Lab Instructors.
  • Guide communities in the processes of collecting, cleaning, and sorting plastics prior to recycling, including documenting the weight of collected and processed materials.
  • Ensure timely collection and submission of data for the recycling program to meet reporting requirements.
  • Prepare reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing data and information on a quarterly basis.
  • Verify that all program reports are submitted punctually, ensuring readiness for internal and grant-required audits.
  • Participate in training sessions provided by the equipment manufacturer.
  • Support the implementation of Fabrication Lab recycling curriculum during school break camps and after-school programs.
  • Maintain effective communication and cooperative working relationships with partners, staff, and other personnel.
  • Identify and develop partnership opportunities as they arise.
  • Participate in scheduled organizational meetings and community meetings as requested.
  • Engage in all required training and project partnership planning meetings.
  • Uphold confidentiality in accordance with regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform all related duties as assigned.

  • Understanding of the social, educational, training, and cultural needs of Alaska Native communities.
  • Strong technical and mechanical skills, with a willingness to learn and maintain industrial equipment.
  • Able and willing to travel to rural communities regularly.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in education, engineering, environmental science, planning and evaluation, fabrication, or a related field. Relevant experience may substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Two (2) years of experience working with youth.
  • Two (2) years of experience in creating and implementing lesson plans and training.
  • Two (2) years of experience with large equipment, including fabrication machinery.
  • Knowledge of plastics recycling processes and best practices.
  • Ability to lift 30-50 lbs regularly.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon completion of a satisfactory state and federal background check.
  • Valid driver's license and insurable under the organization's automotive insurance, which requires a driver to be at least 21 years of age and have held a driver's license for a minimum of three years.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with Alaska Native populations, understanding their values and belief systems, and providing culturally competent services.
  • Experience with Tribal organizations and/or within rural Alaska Native/American Indian communities.
