Position Overview

The Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a Nuclear Research Structural System Engineer to contribute to our Reactor Project Engineering division, focusing on cutting-edge microreactor initiatives. This role operates on a 4x10 schedule, allowing for every Friday off.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Utilize engineering expertise to validate reactor designs and ensure accuracy.
  • Implement engineering processes throughout the design and execution phases.
  • Maintain operational readiness of assigned systems to support nuclear operations and reactor advancements.
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of design requirements, system performance metrics, and maintenance of systems.
  • Supervise design documentation created by reactor designers or subcontractors.
  • Establish quality standards, facilitate startup activities, and manage documentation revisions.
  • Conduct design modifications to enhance advanced reactors.
  • Execute mechanical and structural calculations, designing modifications to existing structures and new engineering projects.
  • Engage in mechanical and structural engineering design, collaborating with external firms on project-specific tasks, including cost and schedule management.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant codes and standards, including ASME BPVC Section III and AISC N690.
  • Implement INL Engineering Standards and DOE Orders in all engineering work.
  • Analyze and evaluate structures in accordance with ASME BPVC Section III.
  • Evaluate advanced microreactor designs against DOE seismic standards.
  • Perform finite element analysis to assess structural integrity.
  • Identify and address issues affecting structural safety and public health.
  • Apply advanced engineering concepts to resolve Structural/Civil challenges.
  • Complete engineering tasks including design, analysis, and maintenance activities.
Qualifications:Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Civil, or Structural Engineering with 5-8+ years of relevant experience, or a Master's Degree with 3-6+ years of experience.
  • Professional Engineering License in Mechanical, Civil, or Structural Engineering is preferred.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, requiring U.S. Citizenship.
Compensation and Benefits:
  • Salary range: Level 3 ($91,588) / Level 4 ($109,908), determined by education and experience.
