Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a skilled TREAT Nuclear Engineer to contribute to our Fuel Development, Performance, & Qualification department. This role operates on a 9x80 schedule, allowing for every other Friday off.

In this position, you will utilize nuclear engineering principles to design, evaluate, and analyze nuclear systems and equipment. You will investigate innovative materials pertinent to radiation detection, nuclear fuels, and reactor technology. Additionally, you will examine the nuclear fuel cycle to identify the most efficient uses of materials and the safest methods for waste disposal, while addressing challenges related to safeguards and verification of nonproliferation measures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with designers, analysts, and stakeholders to establish experimental and packaging requirements for spent nuclear fuel.
  • Employ advanced nuclear engineering design principles and methodologies to break down project objectives into clear and manageable design specifications.
  • Implement best practices in design methodologies and technologies to ensure that designs fulfill established requirements.
  • Set testing, inspection, and quality assurance standards to maintain critical design features.
  • Supervise or ensure compliance with design specifications during fabrication, construction, assembly, and procurement processes.
  • Conduct integrated analyses to confirm that storage, transportation, and disposal requirements are met while adhering to facility safety standards.
  • Support project interactions with sponsors and engineering teams to ensure operations align with facility authorizations.
  • Create physics-based mathematical models for mechanical, chemical, and electrical systems to validate design integrity.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Level 2: Bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Engineering or a related field with 2 years of experience, or a Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering or a related field with no experience.
  • Level 3: Bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Engineering or a related field with 5 years of experience, or a Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering or a related field with 2 years of experience.
  • Familiarity with Bison and/or RELAP5-3D software.
  • This role requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, necessitating U.S. Citizenship.

Compensation Information:

  • Salary range for this position is: Level 2 ($75,804 - $155,496) / Level 3 ($91,008 - $186,588). Compensation is determined based on education, relevant experience, and other qualifications.
