Position Overview:

The Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a dedicated Structural Systems Engineer specializing in Nuclear Research to contribute to our Reactor Project Engineering division, focusing on innovative microreactor initiatives. This role operates on a 4x10 schedule, allowing for a work-life balance with every Friday off.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Utilize engineering expertise to validate reactor designs and ensure accuracy.
  • Implement engineering principles throughout the design and execution phases.
  • Maintain operational readiness of assigned systems to support nuclear operations and reactor advancements.
  • Leverage technical knowledge of design specifications, system performance metrics, and maintenance of systems.
  • Oversee the creation of design documentation, including calculations and specifications, by reactor designers or subcontractors.
  • Establish quality standards, support startup activities, and manage redlines and as-built documentation.
  • Engage in design and modification tasks to enhance advanced reactors at the Materials and Fuels Complex.
  • Conduct mechanical and structural analyses, designing modifications to existing structures and creating new designs for engineering projects.
  • Participate in structural engineering projects, collaborating with external firms on design tasks, project baselining, and compliance with technical requirements.
  • Ensure adherence to code compliance, including ASME BPVC Section III and AISC N690, along with other relevant standards.
  • Verify that INL Engineering Standards and DOE regulations are integrated into all engineering work.
  • Analyze and evaluate structures in accordance with ASME BPVC Section III.
  • Assess advanced microreactor designs against DOE seismic and natural hazard standards.
  • Perform finite element analysis for structural calculations.
  • Evaluate factors affecting structural integrity and public safety.
  • Apply advanced engineering concepts to resolve Structural/Civil engineering challenges.
  • Complete engineering tasks, including design, analysis, and maintenance activities.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Civil, or Structural Engineering with 5-8+ years of relevant experience, or a Master's Degree with 3-6+ years of experience.
  • A Professional Engineering License in Mechanical, Civil, or Structural Engineering is preferred.
  • This role requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, necessitating U.S. Citizenship.
