Position Overview:

The Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a Nuclear Research Structural System Engineer to contribute to our Reactor Project Engineering division, focusing on innovative microreactor initiatives. This role operates on a 4x10 schedule, providing a balanced work-life environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Utilize engineering expertise to validate reactor designs and ensure compliance with established standards.
  • Implement engineering principles throughout the design and execution phases of projects.
  • Maintain operational readiness of assigned systems to facilitate ongoing nuclear operations and reactor advancements.
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of design requirements, system performance metrics, and maintenance protocols.
  • Supervise the preparation of design documentation including calculations, specifications, and system design descriptions conducted by internal teams or external contractors.
  • Establish quality standards, oversee startup activities, and manage documentation revisions.
  • Engage in design and modification tasks to enhance advanced reactor systems.
  • Conduct mechanical and structural analyses, creating both simple and complex modifications to existing structures while designing new ones.
  • Participate in structural engineering projects, collaborating with external firms on project-specific design efforts, cost estimation, and technical requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant codes and standards, including ASME BPVC Section III and AISC N690, among others.
  • Guarantee adherence to INL Engineering Standards and DOE regulations in all engineering activities.
  • Evaluate structures and systems according to ASME BPVC Section III standards.
  • Assess the design integrity of advanced microreactors concerning seismic and other natural hazard standards.
  • Perform finite element analysis to support design evaluations.
  • Identify and analyze factors affecting structural integrity and public safety.
  • Apply advanced engineering concepts to resolve structural and civil engineering challenges.
  • Complete engineering tasks including design, analysis, and maintenance documentation.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Civil, or Structural Engineering with 5-8+ years of relevant experience, or a Master's Degree with 3-6+ years of experience.
  • Professional Engineering License in Mechanical, Civil, or Structural Engineering is preferred.
  • This role requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, necessitating U.S. Citizenship.
