Position Overview:
The Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a qualified Structural Systems Engineer specializing in nuclear research to contribute to our Reactor Project Engineering division, focusing on innovative microreactor initiatives. This role operates on a 4x10 schedule, providing a work-life balance with every Friday off.
Key Responsibilities:
- Utilize engineering expertise to ensure the accuracy of reactor designs.
- Implement engineering processes throughout the design and execution phases.
- Maintain operational readiness of systems and components to facilitate ongoing nuclear operations and reactor advancements.
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of design specifications, performance criteria, and maintenance of assigned systems.
- Supervise design documentation produced by reactor designers or subcontractors.
- Establish quality standards, oversee startup activities, and manage redlines and as-built documentation.
- Conduct design modifications to support advanced reactor projects.
- Perform mechanical and structural calculations, designing modifications to existing structures and new constructions related to engineering projects.
- Engage in mechanical and structural engineering design tasks, collaborating with external engineering firms on project-specific requirements, technical specifications, and construction support.
- Ensure compliance with relevant codes, including ASME BPVC Section III and AISC N690, while also considering ACI, ASCE standards, and IBC.
- Adhere to INL Engineering Standards and DOE Orders in all work.
- Analyze and evaluate structures/systems in accordance with ASME BPVC Section III.
- Evaluate advanced microreactor designs against DOE seismic and natural hazard standards.
- Utilize finite element analysis software for structural calculations.
- Assess situations that may impact structural integrity and public safety.
- Apply advanced engineering techniques to resolve Structural/Civil engineering challenges.
- Complete engineering tasks including design/analysis, maintenance activities, and documentation of operational procedures.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Civil, or Structural Engineering with 5-8+ years of relevant experience, or a Master's Degree with 3-6+ years of experience.
- Professional Engineering License in Mechanical, Civil, or Structural Engineering is preferred.
- This role requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, necessitating U.S. Citizenship.
Compensation and Benefits:
- Salary range for this position is: Level 3 ($91,588) / Level 4 ($109,908). Compensation is determined based on education, experience, and qualifications.
