Position Overview

Job Summary:
The successful candidate will have a proven track record in accurately assessing costs for heavy civil and structural projects, preparing competitive proposals, and offering support throughout the preconstruction phase.

This role requires extensive knowledge of construction methodologies, materials, and industry benchmarks. The Estimator will work closely with project teams, subcontractors, suppliers, and clients to ensure precise and competitive estimates. Additionally, they will play a key role in value engineering, cost assessments, and ongoing improvement initiatives.


Key Responsibilities:
Cost Estimation:

Gathering and analyzing project plans, specifications, bid documents, and scope of work to ascertain the necessary resources, materials, labor, and equipment.

Participating in pre-bid meetings to clarify the scope of work and address any inquiries.

Conducting site inspections to fully comprehend project requirements, site conditions, design challenges, and to establish a project strategy, schedule, and logistics.

Performing detailed quantity takeoffs for structural components, grading, demolition, traffic management, and other essential items to quantify project elements.

Utilizing estimating software, spreadsheets, and historical data to accurately compute project costs.

Reviewing and adjusting estimates based on addenda.

Engaging in communication with Owners and Subcontractors to address all project-related inquiries.

Analyzing cost components, including labor rates, material costs, equipment rentals, and subcontractor proposals.

Identifying opportunities for cost savings and value engineering alternatives.

Creating and presenting comprehensive bid summary reports.


Bid Development and Submission:

Preparing thorough and competitive bids, including detailed cost breakdowns, clarifications, and assumptions.

Identifying the most suitable suppliers and subcontractors for the project and coordinating with them to obtain competitive pricing.

Reviewing bid documents for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to project specifications.

Submitting bids within established deadlines and following up with clients as necessary.

Participating in bid presentations and negotiations.


Preconstruction Assistance:

Providing technical insights during constructability reviews and value engineering discussions.

Contributing to risk assessments and identifying potential project challenges.

Facilitating handover meetings with the field project team, leading the discussions, and transferring all relevant information.

Collaborating with the Senior Estimator/Chief Estimator/Project Manager to finalize the budget for awarded projects.

Setting up awarded projects in the accounting and project management systems, including cost and revenue tracking.

Working with procurement teams to issue purchase orders and subcontracts.

Assisting the Project Manager with Change Orders, budget understanding, cash flow management, and preliminary schedule preparation.


Cost Analysis and Reporting:

Conducting cost analysis and comparisons between estimated costs and actual project expenditures.

Identifying and investigating cost variances, deviations, and trends.

Preparing detailed reports, including budget versus actual analyses, cost forecasts, and project financial summaries.

Providing insights and recommendations to project teams for cost control and improvement measures.

Contributing to lessons learned and knowledge-sharing initiatives.

Inputting cost data into the company database.

Maintaining unit pricing and databases for materials and other costs.


Supplier and Subcontractor Relations:

Communicating with subcontractors and suppliers to request quotes, negotiate pricing, and assess capabilities.

Maintaining relationships with subcontractors and suppliers to ensure reliable and competitive pricing.

Reviewing subcontractor qualifications, insurance requirements, and compliance with project specifications.

Proactively seeking and identifying new subcontractors and vendors to enhance the core subcontractor and vendor list across all markets.


Collaboration and Professional Development:

Collaborating with the field team to gain insights and understanding of construction processes and techniques.

Participating in meetings and training sessions to enhance estimating skills and industry knowledge.


Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, or a related field (preferred).

3-6+ years of experience in heavy civil construction cost estimation, with progressively increasing responsibilities.

Strong knowledge of construction processes, materials, and industry standards.

Proficiency in construction estimating software and tools (Office 365, Bluebeam, Heavy Bid, AGTEK, Project Management, Scheduling Software, etc.).

Advanced skills in quantity takeoff, cost analysis, and pricing.

Excellent analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving abilities.

Effective communication (verbal and written) and negotiation skills.

Strong attention to detail and accuracy.

Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

Knowledge of relevant construction codes, regulations, and safety practices.
