Marine Conservation Research Scientist

ECO Magazine is seeking a dedicated Research Scientist to enhance our Conservation Research Program, focusing on pivotal areas such as Clean Waters, Climate Resilience, and Sustainable Seas.

The Research Scientist will spearhead, develop, and collaborate on innovative conservation research initiatives. This role involves working closely with a diverse team of staff, volunteers, students, and external collaborators, including tribal, academic, NGO, and government scientists. Additionally, the Research Scientist will play a crucial role in fundraising efforts alongside the Senior Conservation Research Manager to ensure the growth and sustainability of the research program.

Key Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will advance the conservation research agenda under the guidance of the Senior Conservation Research Manager. Core responsibilities include:

Research and Data Analysis
  • Lead and implement impactful research projects aligned with the organization's mission and conservation priorities.
  • Develop methodologies that leverage the unique aspects of the organization’s location and team.
  • Gather and analyze data to address critical research questions.
  • Utilize data entry and analysis software to identify significant trends.
  • Communicate findings effectively to various audiences, including academic and community stakeholders.
  • Support research initiatives led by colleagues to ensure timely progress and deliverables.
Partnership Development
  • Foster internal collaborations to promote interdisciplinary efforts.
  • Build and maintain external partnerships to enhance communication and joint initiatives.
Community Engagement and Knowledge Sharing
  • Organize meetings and training sessions to cultivate community engagement and capacity building.
  • Publish research findings in both peer-reviewed and public forums, and present at relevant events.
  • Engage in public speaking opportunities to disseminate research insights.
  • Collaborate with marketing and communications teams to create effective outreach materials.
Team Leadership and Fundraising
  • Oversee research staff and volunteers, providing mentorship and guidance.
  • Act as a role model for safety and compliance within research environments.
  • Seek funding opportunities to support ongoing and new research initiatives, including proposal and budget preparation.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

We welcome candidates with diverse educational backgrounds and experiences. Minimum qualifications include:

  • A minimum of five years of relevant experience, typically with a Master's degree and three years of research experience, or a Ph.D.
  • Proven track record in leading and developing research projects.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills, with the ability to convey scientific concepts to varied audiences.
  • Experience working collaboratively with diverse groups.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects effectively.
  • Self-driven and proactive in seeking support when necessary.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative mindset.
  • Must possess or be eligible for a valid driver's license.
  • Experience navigating complex research environments to influence policy.
  • Connection to multicultural and multilingual communities, with a history of community involvement.
Working Conditions:

  • Willingness to travel for fieldwork and conferences as required.

Compensation: Competitive hourly rate based on experience.
