Shift: Tuesday - Saturday, 8:00am - 5:00pm

Mission: The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History inspires a thirst for discovery and a passion for the natural world.

Position Overview: The Facilities Operations Supervisor is responsible for overseeing and facilitating the daily operations related to the upkeep of the Museum's facilities, including the buildings and grounds, vehicles, and all associated equipment. This role requires hands-on involvement in setting up for events, programs, and general operational tasks. A solid understanding of facility maintenance and repair is essential, along with the physical capability to rearrange furniture and equipment as needed. Collaboration with the Director of Facilities is key to maintaining a schedule for preventive maintenance of the museum's assets.

Key Responsibilities:

Facility Management
  • Oversees and executes general maintenance and repairs across the Museum's campus.
  • Supervises facility staff, including recruitment, task assignment, training, and performance evaluations.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Facilities to develop and manage preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Plans maintenance activities around museum events, utilizing a shared calendar system.
  • Coordinates routine maintenance for the physical plant, equipment, and machinery.
  • Facilitates repairs and maintenance, including managing third-party contractors.
  • Responds to help tickets and work orders promptly.
  • Conducts inspections and performs basic repairs on museum vehicles.
  • Maintains and organizes tools and supplies for the facility.
  • Ensures cleanliness and safety throughout the Museum's premises.
  • Supports the Sea Center with maintenance and event logistics.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
Event Support and Coordination
  • Collaborates with various departments, particularly the Special Events Manager, to prepare facilities for public and private events.
  • Assists the Exhibits Division with the setup and maintenance of exhibits.
  • Coordinates work orders from different departments effectively.
Safety and Compliance
  • Implements safety protocols and housekeeping standards.
  • Maintains records for hazardous materials and safety data sheets.
  • Coordinates safety training for all staff members.
  • Manages the alarm system in conjunction with local services.
  • Participates in the Museum's Safety Committee.
  • Assists the Director of Facilities in executing safety regulations and training.
Leadership and Team Development
  • Oversees facility operations in the absence of the Director of Facilities.
  • Promotes a culture of teamwork and organizational values.
  • Ensures adherence to Museum policies and addresses any issues.
  • Delegates responsibilities and provides guidance to staff.
  • Trains staff on emergency procedures and safety equipment usage.
  • Contributes to a positive visitor experience by engaging with guests.
  • Supports the Museum's commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Essential Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 2 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • At least 1 year of experience in maintenance.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team setting.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Proficient in using tools and machinery relevant to facility maintenance.
  • Willingness to work on weekends as needed.
  • Ability to follow instructions and communicate effectively.
  • Calm decision-making skills in emergency situations.
  • Professional demeanor in interactions with the public.
  • Valid California Driver's License with a clean driving record.
  • Basic computer skills, including email and calendar management.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in large facility maintenance.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Knowledge of budget management and cost estimation.
  • Familiarity with general handyman skills and small power tools.
Work Environment:
  • Regular work throughout all Museum facilities, including galleries and outdoor areas.
  • Frequent physical activity, including lifting and climbing.
  • Occasional exposure to chemicals and cleaning agents.
