Ballington Plaza serves as a vital low-income housing resource, offering a safe haven in a challenging urban environment. This secured residential complex is home to numerous veterans and individuals who have previously experienced homelessness.

Position Summary

The Groundskeeper is responsible for executing daily cleaning tasks, performing light maintenance, and ensuring the upkeep of the facility's grounds. This role includes reporting any maintenance or safety issues to management for prompt resolution. The Groundskeeper is committed to maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary environment for both the interior and exterior of the facility, adhering to established cleaning schedules.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain the cleanliness and order of the facility's interior and exterior, including the building, parking areas, and surrounding grounds.
  • Conduct daily cleaning of designated areas while following safety protocols and utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Restock restroom supplies as needed.
  • Perform tasks such as dusting, window washing, waste disposal, and vacuuming common areas.
  • Assist with minor repairs, which may include carpentry, plumbing, painting, and landscape maintenance.
  • Follow a daily checklist provided by the supervisor to ensure all tasks are completed efficiently.
  • Ensure tools and supplies are organized and stored properly, maintaining cleanliness in storage areas.
  • Keep outdoor spaces safe and visually appealing, including the care of shrubs and plants.
  • Ensure the irrigation system is functioning correctly and perform lawn maintenance as required.
  • Conduct daily safety inspections of the facility, understanding and adhering to local safety codes and regulations.
  • Prepare and arrange rooms for meetings and events as needed.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Ability to pass a background check, including fingerprint clearance and verification of personal references.

Experience:

  • Prior experience in cleaning high-traffic areas and restrooms or similar maintenance roles.

Knowledge:

  • Understanding of safe handling procedures for cleaning chemicals and materials.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to perform effectively in potentially stressful situations, including interactions with challenging clients.
  • Capability to meet job functions in compliance with ADA, FMLA, and other relevant standards, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Consistent and punctual attendance in accordance with ADA, FMLA, and other applicable standards.

Competencies:

  • Possession of a valid California driver's license with a clean driving record to meet insurance requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in custodial or maintenance roles within a shelter or educational environment is advantageous.
  • Ability to read and understand instructions in English is preferred.
  • Background in construction trades is a plus.
  • Familiarity with homelessness and related social issues is beneficial.
