Hope Street Shelter
In partnership with the City of Los Angeles Housing and Community Investment Program, VOALA manages the Hope Street Shelter, which provides a comprehensive suite of services, including: Case Management, Affordable Housing Support, Transitional Housing, Permanent Housing Solutions, and initiatives aimed at ensuring housing and income stability.
Position Summary
The Custodian is responsible for executing daily cleaning tasks and performing minor repairs within the facility. This role involves reporting any maintenance or safety issues to management for prompt resolution. The Custodian ensures the cleanliness, sanitation, and safety of the facility, following the janitorial schedules provided.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain the cleanliness of both the interior and exterior of the facility, including the building, parking areas, and grounds.
- Conduct daily cleaning of assigned spaces using appropriate cleaning agents.
- Restock supplies in restrooms.
- Perform dusting, window cleaning, waste disposal, and vacuuming in common areas.
- Assist with minor repairs, which may include carpentry, plumbing, painting, and landscaping.
- Adhere to daily checklists provided by the supervisor, ensuring tools and supplies are organized and secured.
- Inspect the facility daily for safety hazards, ensuring compliance with local safety codes and regulations.
- Prepare and arrange rooms for meetings, classes, and events.
- Complete additional tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
Requirements:
- Must successfully pass a fingerprint clearance and background check, including criminal history and employment verification.
Experience:
- Prior experience in cleaning high-traffic areas and restrooms, or relevant building maintenance experience.
Knowledge:
- Understanding of safe handling procedures for cleaning chemicals and materials.
Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to work effectively in emotionally charged situations, including interactions with challenging clients.
- Capability to perform essential job functions in accordance with ADA, FMLA, and other relevant standards, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Commitment to maintaining regular and punctual attendance.
Competencies:
- Possession of a valid California driver's license with a clean driving record to meet insurance requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience in custodial or maintenance roles within a shelter or educational environment.
- Ability to read and comprehend instructions in English.
- Background in construction trades is advantageous.
- Familiarity with homelessness and related issues is a plus.
