Lead Engineer for Fire and Life Safety Operations

This role focuses on the operational aspects of Fire and Life Safety systems. The primary objective is to ensure comprehensive support for fire protection systems throughout their lifecycle, oversee testing procedures, and manage system deficiencies and enhancements across various facilities, including transit maintenance and operations centers. The ideal candidate will leverage their expertise in fire protection systems and transit operations to uphold safety, technical performance, and system reliability. Additionally, this position serves as the operational authority on fire, life, and safety systems.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties represent the primary responsibilities of the role. The incumbent may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be assigned additional, position-specific tasks.
- Manage the support and testing of all operational fire-life-safety systems to maintain optimal condition.
- Conduct fire protection reviews for design and construction submissions within the Operations Department.
- Provide engineering support and coordination for all testing of in-service fire-life-safety systems to ensure readiness.
- Prepare reports and obtain necessary approvals from local fire and building officials; respond to audits and provide status updates.
- Assist the Operations Engineering and Technology division as needed; participate in various committees and stay informed on industry trends.
- Be available for testing and commissioning support during construction phases, collaborating with engineering teams to achieve Agency objectives.
- Act as a liaison with local fire departments and authorities, fostering cooperative relationships with municipal fire safety officials.
- Promote and exemplify Sound Transit’s core values and contribute to a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- All employees are expected to adhere to safety regulations and integrate sustainability into daily operations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field, or current fire-alarm licenses (e.g., SC-1, FA-1, NICET Level 2). A minimum of five years of experience in Fire Protection Systems Engineering, including design, consulting, operational support, and fieldwork; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in a rail or transit environment is preferred.
Preferred Licenses or Certifications: Active Washington State Professional Engineer license with endorsements in fire protection and fire alarm engineering.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Familiarity with National Fire Protection Association Codes and Regulations.
- Understanding of NFPA 130 Standard for Fixed Guideway Transit and Passenger Rail Systems.
- Knowledge of fundamental electrical engineering concepts.
- Proficiency in fire protection management principles, including active and passive suppression systems.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and adapt to changing priorities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Competence in modern office procedures and computer applications.
- Experience in testing and commissioning of facilities.
- Skills in troubleshooting and repair techniques.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with various stakeholders.
- Experience in interpreting and applying policies and regulations.
- Ability to prepare and analyze complex data and reports.
- Proficiency in utilizing software for compiling and preparing reports.
- Experience in developing construction specifications and test procedures.
- Work is conducted in a hybrid office and field environment, including transit system facilities.
- Fieldwork may involve exposure to hazardous conditions and physical demands.
- Position requires on-site presence during non-revenue hours for testing and emergency support.
- Includes rotating on-call technical support for critical incidents.
