Compensation ranges from $80,000 to $175,000, with a midpoint of $125,000. New employees typically start between the minimum and midpoint, with potential for higher offers based on experience and market conditions.

GENERAL PURPOSE:

This position focuses on operational aspects of Fire-Life Safety systems. The role involves providing lifecycle support for fire protection systems, overseeing confidence testing, and managing system deficiencies and enhancements across various transit facilities.

The ideal candidate will leverage their expertise in fire protection systems and transit operations to uphold Agency Safety, Technical Performance, and system availability.

Collaboration with fire systems engineers in Design Engineering and Construction Management (DECM) and Safety and Quality Management (SQM) is essential, along with liaising with regulatory authorities and supporting the testing and commissioning of fire detection and suppression systems.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The following duties represent the primary responsibilities of this role:

  • Oversee the maintenance and testing of in-service fire-life-safety systems to ensure optimal performance.
  • Conduct fire protection reviews of design and construction submissions.
  • Provide engineering support for testing to maintain readiness of fire-life-safety systems.
  • Prepare reports and respond to audits from local fire and building officials.
  • Support Operations Engineering and Technology division as needed and participate in relevant committees.
  • Maintain awareness of industry trends and ensure compliance with applicable laws and Agency policies.
  • Collaborate with DECM and SQM engineers to develop effective solutions for Agency goals.
  • Foster respectful and productive relationships with municipal fire safety officials.
  • Promote Sound Transit’s core values and contribute to a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Adhere to Agency safety regulations and integrate sustainability into daily practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field, or possession of current fire-alarm licenses (e.g., SC-1, FA-1, NICET Level 2). A minimum of five years of experience in Fire Protection Systems Engineering, including design, operational support, and fieldwork, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in a rail or transit environment is preferred.


Preferred Licenses or Certifications:

Active Washington State Professional Engineer license with endorsements in fire protection and fire alarm engineering.


Required Knowledge and Skills:

Knowledge of National Fire Protection Association Codes and Regulations, NFPA 130 Standard for Fixed Guideway Transit and Passenger Rail Systems, and fundamental electrical engineering concepts.

Proficiency in fire protection engineering principles, methods, and techniques, along with effective pressure management and deadline adherence.

Strong written and verbal communication skills, including report preparation and public speaking.

Ability to interpret and apply policies and regulations, analyze complex data, and maintain effective working relationships with various stakeholders.

Experience with personal computer software for compiling reports and developing specifications.


Physical Demands / Work Environment:

This role is performed in a hybrid office and transit system field environment, which may involve exposure to hazardous conditions and physical demands, including lifting objects up to 25 pounds. The position requires on-site presence during non-revenue hours for emergency support and includes rotating on-call responsibilities.
