GENERAL PURPOSE:

This position focuses on operational aspects of fire-life-safety systems. The primary objective is to provide comprehensive support for fire protection systems, oversee confidence testing, and manage system deficiencies, impairments, and operational enhancements across various facilities, including transit maintenance, public transit stations, transit tunnels, and control centers.

The ideal candidate will leverage their expertise in fire protection systems and transit operations to uphold Agency Safety, Technical Performance, and system availability. Additionally, this role requires collaboration with fire systems engineers in Design Engineering and Construction Management (DECM) and Safety and Quality Management (SQM) departments, as well as liaising with regulatory authorities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The following duties represent the primary responsibilities of this role:

  • Oversee support and testing to maintain all in-service fire-life-safety systems in optimal condition.
  • Conduct fire protection reviews of design and construction submissions.
  • Provide engineering support for all in-service fire-life-safety system testing to ensure readiness.
  • Prepare reports and requests for local fire and building officials; respond to audits.
  • Support the Operations Engineering and Technology division as directed; participate in various committees; stay informed of new trends and developments in the field.
  • Be available for testing and commissioning support during construction phases.
  • Foster productive relationships with local fire departments and regulatory authorities.
  • Promote a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion in alignment with Sound Transit’s policies.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field, or possession of current fire-alarm licenses (e.g., SC-1, FA-1, NICET Level 2). A minimum of five years of experience in Fire Protection Systems Engineering, including design work and operational support, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Experience in a rail or transit environment is preferred.

Preferred Licenses or Certifications:

Active Washington State Professional Engineer license with endorsements in fire protection engineering and fire alarm engineering.

Required Knowledge and Skills:
  • Familiarity with National Fire Protection Association Codes and Regulations.
  • Understanding of NFPA 130 Standard for Fixed Guideway Transit and Passenger Rail Systems.
  • Knowledge of fire protection management principles, fire dynamics, and suppression systems.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in modern office procedures and computer applications.
Physical Demands / Work Environment:

Work occurs in a hybrid office and transit system field environment, including rail tunnels and equipment rooms. Fieldwork may involve exposure to hazardous conditions. The position requires on-site presence during non-revenue hours for emergency system testing and repairs. Rotating 24/7 on-call technical support is also a requirement.
