Huntsville, Alabama, United States Leidos Holding Full time

The Missile and Aviation Solutions Division at Leidos is in search of a skilled Avionics Systems Engineer to contribute to a diverse team focused on crafting innovative solutions for intricate challenges. With a presence across the United States in defense, aerospace, cyber, and commercial sectors, Leidos delivers responsive, cost-efficient engineering, scientific, and IT solutions. This position is based in Huntsville, AL.

The Missile and Aviation Solutions Division emphasizes the application of core disciplines such as modeling and simulation, aerodynamic design, guidance and control, software engineering, integrated vehicle design, and system integration in an agile environment. This approach is supported by closely-knit engineering teams aimed at fulfilling and surpassing our clients' collective vision for affordable, effective, and innovative integrated flight systems while fostering motivated engineering and support teams.

The Avionics Systems Engineer will engage in multiple programs simultaneously across various engineering domains and team dynamics. The division boasts a varied portfolio of projects specializing in strike systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, and modeling & simulation of both domestically developed and foreign flight vehicles. The ideal candidate will play a pivotal role in leading the design evolution of flight vehicles, encompassing Systems Engineering, as well as Software and Hardware Design for Avionics.

Key Responsibilities
The Avionics Systems Engineer will create tailored Systems Engineering documentation derived from customer requirements for product development programs linked to the Department of Defense. The selected individual will collaborate with program management and design engineers to address a program's systems engineering needs throughout its design lifecycle, which includes modeling system behavior, defining system architecture, establishing system interfaces, conducting requirements verification, and assisting in the development and execution of test programs. Given the nature of the programs supported by the Missile and Aviation Solutions Division, the ability to customize each program's Systems Engineering approach is crucial for the successful execution of this role.

This position will also involve the development of a Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) model for certain flight systems. The Avionics Systems Engineer must possess a functional understanding of interacting with MBSE models to facilitate MBSE activities. Other programs may necessitate a less formal Systems Engineering approach to enable rapid, agile development efforts.

The successful candidate will also be expected to perform additional flight system design tasks beyond Systems Engineering. Responsibilities will include Avionics Software and Hardware design, necessitating a technical background in a related field (e.g., aerospace, mechanical, electrical, or software engineering) that can be applied to flight system design and development.

Specific duties may include team leadership, requirements development and derivation, system and subsystem architecture design, interface development and documentation, test planning, traceability, and test execution, which encompasses ground, hardware-in-the-loop, and flight testing. Oversight of mechanical and electronic design for flight vehicle avionics subsystems, as well as leadership in software design, are also part of the role.

Basic Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree in systems engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related degree from an ABET-accredited institution with 8+ years of experience, or a Master of Science with 6+ years.
  • Ability to interpret potentially disparate, stated or implied, high-level objectives from various stakeholders and collaboratively translate them into a vision for the design evolution of the system.
  • Strong technical background in defense systems (or subsystems).
  • Familiarity with Systems Engineering-based requirements development, derivation, and test planning, preferably for flight systems.
  • Experience with software and/or hardware architecture and interface design.
  • Hands-on experience in developing, documenting, and executing test processes and procedures for flight systems is preferred.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail to document work and communicate effectively with team members.
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative engineering environment, working closely with multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated experience in effectively leading a team of engineers.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with customers, subcontractors, and partner organizations to build consensus around high-level design decisions.
  • US citizenship with the ability to obtain a DoD secret level security clearance is required.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred candidates will also have experience and/or working knowledge with:
  • Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) modeling tools.
  • Requirements database tools.
  • Flight systems and an understanding of flight principles.
  • Establishing design artifacts, supporting or leading design reviews, assisting with Technical Data Packages (TDP), and supporting production and testing of flight systems.
  • Testing of flight system components, subsystems, systems, and related test equipment, including sensor instrumentation and datalinks.
  • Hardware-in-the-loop integration, testing, and test planning in a real-time environment.
  • Familiarity with software development, integration, and testing, as well as requirements development and verification (modeling and simulation background is a plus).
  • Candidates with 7-10 years of experience are preferred.
  • Active DoD secret level security clearance is preferred.
