Position Summary
The Environmental Scientist will play a vital role in various environmental initiatives, including biological surveys, assessments, wetland evaluations, and compliance documentation under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). This role entails responsibilities such as data gathering, field investigations, liaising with regulatory agencies, and authoring technical reports. The successful candidate will work both independently and collaboratively with a team of experts in natural resources and environmental science.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough research on regulatory guidelines, literature, and expert input to assess potential impacts, explore alternatives, and identify necessary mitigation measures for diverse environmental documentation.
  • Design and implement new field studies, including short-term surveys and assessments of natural communities and wildlife habitats.
  • Gather, interpret, and analyze data, summarizing findings for comprehensive reports.
  • Draft and prepare scientific reports, NEPA resource sections, and technical documents, including biological assessments and wetland evaluations.
  • Utilize scientific knowledge to analyze and present findings from both field and desktop studies.
  • Engage professionally with clients to cultivate and maintain business relationships.
  • Coordinate with federal, state, and local agencies to gather necessary data.
  • Propose alternatives to project plans or procedural changes to reduce environmental impacts.
  • Participate in briefings, seminars, and public meetings related to environmental issues as required.
  • Possess familiarity with federal and state environmental regulations, particularly those concerning wetlands, waters, and wildlife.
  • Assist in business development efforts to expand our Natural Resources Program in the southwestern and intermountain western regions.
  • Serve as Project Manager as needed.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, natural resources, wildlife management, botany, ecology, or a related field.
  • Working knowledge of the NEPA process and environmental documentation.
  • Proven ability to analyze information accurately, make informed decisions, and meet deadlines.
  • Experience in managing environmental permitting projects.
  • A minimum of five years of relevant professional experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Basic understanding of statistics and database management.
  • Experience with GIS software, such as ArcGIS.
  • Strong technical writing and editing capabilities.
  • Excellent communication and client relationship management skills.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Capacity to manage multiple projects and adapt to changing priorities.
  • A positive, proactive approach to tasks and responsibilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with sensitive species surveys, avian assessments, wetland evaluations, and other fieldwork.
  • Knowledge of rare, threatened, or endangered species in the Southwest Region.
  • Familiarity with the NEPA, Endangered Species Act, and Clean Water Act.
  • Demonstrated fieldwork experience and ability to lead technical teams.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to pass pre-employment and ongoing drug/alcohol testing and background checks.
  • Willingness to travel and work in various field locations, including challenging terrains.
  • Capability to lift up to 20 lbs.
