Position Overview:
The State of Florida is seeking a dedicated individual for the role of Fisheries and Wildlife Biological Scientist II. This position plays a crucial role in the management and conservation of fish and wildlife resources, contributing to the well-being of these species and the public.
Key Responsibilities:
- Monitoring Activities: Conduct comprehensive monitoring of the federally endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker (RCW) within designated wildlife management areas. Responsibilities include assessing cavity activity, maintaining natural and artificial nesting sites, and conducting tree climbing for monitoring purposes.
- Data Management: Responsible for data entry, preparation of annual reports, and GPS data collection. Utilize GIS technology to create maps that support management planning.
- Habitat Management: Engage in habitat enhancement activities, including the removal of invasive species and the installation of cavity inserts. Assist in prescribed burning operations to promote healthy ecosystems.
- Collaboration: Work alongside other biologists and conservation personnel to ensure effective management practices are implemented. Participate in various surveys and operational tasks as needed.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in avian ecology and species management, with proficiency in GPS technology and GIS software. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to work independently and as part of a team, exhibit excellent organizational skills, and have a keen interest in outdoor work.
Education: A Bachelor of Science degree in biological sciences is preferred, with relevant professional experience considered as a substitute.
Additional Requirements: Candidates must be able to obtain a Florida Class E Driver's License and are expected to work in various environmental conditions.
