Position Overview
The Clinical Laboratory Specialist will report to the Laboratory Supervisor and is responsible for conducting essential laboratory analyses to support patient care and enhance health outcomes.

Work is carried out with a significant level of autonomy, utilizing clinical laboratory expertise and methodologies, requiring sound judgment in overseeing testing protocols, quality assurance, and interpreting results.

This role operates under the guidance of the Laboratory Manager.
Key Responsibilities
  • Conducts laboratory tests across various complexity levels, including CLIA waived, moderate, and high complexity.
  • Demonstrates expertise in blood collection techniques, including venipuncture and capillary sampling.
  • Ensures timely reporting of laboratory results.
  • Provides assistance in the interpretation of test outcomes as necessary.
  • Participates in laboratory inventory management, including supply ordering when required.
  • Communicates critical laboratory findings to relevant personnel promptly.
  • Trains staff on standard procedures and familiarizes them with laboratory operations.
  • Understands the criteria for specimen collection and processing for external laboratory tests.
  • Engages in proficiency testing, monitors documentation, and upholds quality control standards.
  • Assists in infection control reporting as necessary.
  • Maintains and calibrates laboratory equipment, ensuring compliance with OSHA and CLIA standards.
  • Delivers test results to requesting healthcare providers.
  • Effectively troubleshoots and resolves common laboratory equipment issues.
  • Escalates complex problems to the laboratory manager/director.
  • Recognizes age-specific laboratory values and incorporates these parameters into result interpretation.
  • Possesses comprehensive knowledge of laboratory procedures relevant to the assigned areas.
  • Understands laboratory instruments, equipment, and terminology.
  • Maintains thorough knowledge of exposure control and universal precautions.
  • Utilizes personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
  • Understands the physiological processes being monitored and the application of medical laboratory science.
  • Demonstrates the ability to make precise observations and document test results accurately.
  • Follows oral and written instructions effectively.
  • Communicates efficiently with colleagues and clients.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills
  • Must hold a current Louisiana license as a medical technologist, medical laboratory technician, or equivalent.
  • Graduated from an accredited medical or clinical laboratory training program with an associate's or bachelor's degree.
  • At least one year of clinical laboratory experience in high complexity testing.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
Skills
  • Effective communication skills in English, both verbal and written.
  • Basic computer proficiency.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequent sitting and standing; ability to lift up to 25 pounds; moderate travel required.
  • Constant ability to read and utilize a computer screen; good overall vision, including color perception.
  • Manual dexterity for writing, operating a keyboard, and handling small objects.
  • Ability to make decisions and maintain concentration consistently.
